OTAGO UNI - MAORI ON-CAMPUS EXPERIENCE

Māori OCE – Sunday 5 July – Thursday 9 July

This programme has been running for over 20 years and provides an amazing, fully paid experience for students of Māori descent to experience campus life at Otago, live in a residential college and meet an array of academics and support staff. If you are considering Otago for study in 2027 and have NCEA Level 2 endorsed with Merit, apply for this fantastic programme.

Track Cycling Opportunity

Battle of the Schools track Cycling event is back for 2026.  It is an opportunity for experienced track cyclists and people who have never ridden on the track.  You just need to be able to ride a bike, all the equipment including a bike is provided.  

Battle of the Schools is a team challenge open to students in school years 5 to 13. Riders form teams of three to four and take part in a six week training block before race day. The programme is suitable for both brand new riders and experienced cyclists, with four categories designed to suit all levels. 

Key event details • School years 5 to 13 (participants must be at least 135 cm tall) 
• Teams of 3 to 4 riders 
• Six-week training block starting Sunday 10th May, with one track session per week 
• Race Day on Saturday 20 June 
• Four categories to suit all ability levels 
• Bike and helmet included 
• A fun race day atmosphere with food trucks, spot prizes, face painting and more 


Forestry Training

Monday 30/03/2026 - Thursday 2/04/2026

This is a 1 week programme where Silivipath  https://www.silvipath.co.nz/ can take up to 4 students out to various Forestry operations to gain hands-on experience in pruning, planting, plotting, and thinning. For some of the trainees, employment opportunities may be available beyond the courses with contractors they work closely with. 

Patrick from Silivipath will be coming in to the Career Centre on Monday the 15th of June at 1.30 to do a talk if you're interested, please come and register with Tracy in the Career Centre.


GIRLS IN INFRASTRUCTURE EVENT

An event to broaden awareness and ignite interest among Year 12 and 13 girls about the diverse and rewarding career paths available in the infrastructure industry. Step onto a live construction site, gain hands-on experience with heavy machinery, and engage in meaningful conversations with education providers.

Come find out more on Monday the 15th of June at 1.30pm in the Career Centre (please come put your name down and I will send you a reminder message closer to the time). 1-2 day block course for Chainsawing, Forestry, Health and Safety, Pruning, Planting and much more. A Forestry Pathways Experience which is a 1 week programme where you'll go out to various Forestry operations to gain hands-on experience in pruning, planting, plotting, and thinning. The Library is at it again offering another Craft Workshop for term 2. 

This term we will be making trinket shelves using cardboard, paper mache, and various decorations! Use them to hold you precious objects, jewellery, candles or perhaps a photo. Everything you need will be provided (sadly, not the trinkets!).

Otago Uni On-Campus Experience for Maori Students

Monday 25/05/2026 - Friday 29/05/2026

Twenty Maori students from across NZ will experience three days/nights at Otago's Dunedin campus experiencing university life first-hand: staying in student accommodation, attending lectures; meeting current Otago students; and learning about the various degree and study options offered, particularly in health. 

Expenses (flights, accommodation, food and activities) are paid through a scholarship.

Applicants need to

  • have an aspiration in a career in health
  • be studying sciences at Level 3 (Two of: Chemistry/Physics/Biology)
  • be ideally involved or interested in Te Ao Māori 
Dates: 3-6 August
