Background

Context
Awanui School is in Kaitaia and provides education for ākonga in Years 1 to 6. The school has been at the same site since 1915 and was established in 1872 as a Native School. The school’s motto ‘Na te whainga teitei ka taea – Through high endeavour achieve’ supports the school’s valued outcomes for ākonga.
Awanui School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:
- to ensure the Hauora of everyone at our school is cared for
- all students are encouraged and supported to achieve to the best of their ability
- to make our school so awesome everybody wants to be here.
You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Awanui School’s website.
ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how well the school’s strategic priority of Hauora impacts on equitable and excellent outcomes for all ākonga.
The rationale for selecting this evaluation is to:
- understand how the local curriculum is supporting growth in ākonga wellbeing
- further support and build on culturally responsive learning-centred relationships with learners, parents, whānau and teachers
- strengthen and extend internal evaluation processes and practices.
The school expects to see:
- an explicit focus on Hauora where ākonga experience deep learning in relation to te ao Māori, te reo Māori me ōna tikanga and mātauranga Māori
- educationally powerful relationships, where meaningful, respectful and purposeful learning relationships between home and school contribute to the learning, well-being and self-efficacy of all ākonga
- leaders and teachers further monitoring, inquiring, building knowledge, and evaluating to inform equitable and excellent ākonga outcomes.
Strengths
The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to evaluate how well the school’s learning priority of Hauora impacts on equitable and excellent outcomes for all ākonga:
- leaders and teachers implement strengths-based inclusive approaches that ensure ākonga have a sense of belonging and ownership of their learning
- teachers and leaders use relevant and useful assessment data to engage in collaborative and thoughtful evidence-informed conversations
- learning-centred relationships are respectful and productive; difference and diversity are valued.
Where to next?
Moving forward, the school will prioritise:
- further monitoring and evaluating of conditions that promote hauora, equity and excellence for all ākonga
- strengthening professional capability inclusive of te ao Māori, te reo Māori me ōna tikanga and mātauranga Māori
- building on a range of strategies that sustain meaningful, respectful and purposeful learning relationships.
ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
