Background

Context
Kaeo School in Northland caters for students from Years 1 to 6. The school’s mission sits at the heart of all school operations and is ‘to aim high, stand tall – taraia ngā taumata, e tu teitei’. The vision is that children will become confident and self-motivated learners who understand themselves, relate positively to others and contribute to making society a better place. This vision is underpinned by the school values of learn, love, contribute and grow.
Kaeo School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are to:
- rebuild and strengthen school learning focus and culture affected by the disruption caused by the Covid 19 pandemic
- rebuild well-being and engagement of all those connected with the school
- effectively manage major rebuilding project taking place in 2023/2024.
You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Kaeo School’s website.
ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how well a positive school culture can be
re-established to improve teaching and learning creating equitable and excellent outcomes for all tamariki.
The rationale for selecting this evaluation is to:
- strengthen positive learning relationships
- enable tamariki to achieve success, with a specific focus on tamariki Māori
- provide sustained and targeted support to improve learning outcomes for all tamariki
- re-establish core beliefs to enable all tamariki to reach their full potential, be enthusiastic learners, and develop lifelong relationship skills.
The school expects to see positive learning relationships leading to improved outcomes for all tamariki.
Strengths
The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to re-establish a positive learning culture:
- a strong focus on students’ well-being and a strategy for improving Māori achievement
- reflective and experienced school staff
- experienced and committed school leadership and board
- excellent community support who engage well with the school.
Where to next?
Moving forward, the school will prioritise:
- re-establishing and strengthening the wellbeing of students and staff to enhance their success
- rebuilding the school structures and expectations focusing on children’s wellbeing, teaching and learning
- reinvigorating students’ engagement in learning and extending school experiences both inside and outside the classroom
- managing the major building work to be undertaken in 2023/24.
ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
