Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within six months of the Education Review Office and Mangawhai Beach School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Mangawhai Beach School is in Mangawhai, Te Tai Tokerau and provides education for students in Years 1 to 8. The school’s vision is “Engaged and diverse learners connected to our community” and the values of Creativity, Resilience, Excellence, Whakaute (respect) are integrated into all areas of school life.

Mangawhai Beach School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

  • effective leadership and teaching

  • enhanced culture and climate

  • increased stakeholder engagement

  • improved performance.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Mangawhai Beach School’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how well writing programmes across the school are improving achievement for all students.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:

  • data analysis has shown a drop in writing achievement, especially for boys, which has resulted in a schoolwide review of evidence-based practices

  • the school is embedding a structured literacy approach across all year levels to achieve equitable and excellent outcomes for all students.

The school expects to see:

  • a cohesive and consistent approach to the teaching of writing across the curriculum

  • accelerated student learning across all year levels

  • collaboration with whānau to improve writing across the school.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to evaluate how well writing programmes across the school are improving achievement for all students:

  • the school has the collective capacity to do and use evaluation, inquiry and knowledge building for improvement and innovation

  • leadership consistently prioritises and plans for school improvement and for equitable and excellent outcomes for all students

  • well-established educationally powerful connections, communication and relationships with whānau to support student learning and outcomes.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • further development of literacy frameworks and consistent tracking and assessment processes to support student learning across the school

  • professional learning for teachers and kaiawhina to enable them to develop tools and resources to support their practice

  • collaboration with whānau to enable them to be active partners in the literacy and communication progress of their child.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
