Background
This Profile Report was written within 12 months of the Education Review Office and Maungaturoto School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. Context
Maungaturoto School, is a rural school north of Auckland. It caters for students in Years 1 to 6. The school’s mission is ‘Uplift our children, for they are our future – Me hapaitia i ngā tamariki, ko roto rātou ngā pataka āpōpō’. Its vision is for students to be resilient, effective communicators, actively involved, lifelong learners (REAL) with values of community - whanaungatanga, a ‘can do’ attitude - kia kaha, respect - manaakitanga, excellence - hiranga (CARE).
Maungaturoto School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are to:

provide rich child centred learning opportunities for all children so all leaners achieve to their potential

provide an environment where everyone feels safe and appreciated
-
continue to grow positive whānau and community relationships.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate the effectiveness in implementing their localised curriculum, focused on supporting tamariki to become more environmentally connected and take greater ownership of their learning.
The rationale for selecting this evaluation is to:

promote identified areas of improvement in the school's strategic plan
-
provide a wider range of experiences in the arts, science, and social studies through explicit teaching and learning focussed on developing student agency
-
broaden opportunities for tamariki through a responsive localised curriculum
-
ensure effective teaching practice is supported by professional learning opportunities and collaboration with kaiako.
The school expects to see:

greater learning connections made to the local environment

teaching and learning experiences that help children to have greater ownership of their learning

explicit connections made to the children’s language, culture and identity
-
strengthened learning relationships with whānau that support equitable and excellent learner outcomes.

Where to next?
Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

community consultation to establish whānau and iwi aspirations for Maungaturoto School tamariki

determine available local resources in the environment, that can be utilised to support curriculum delivery
-
a localised, culturally responsive curriculum focused on ensuring learning is highly relevant and engaging for all tamariki.
ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community.
