Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within 6 months of the Education Review Office and Ohaeawai School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Ohaeawai school situated east of Kaikohe, Northland, caters for children in Years 1 – 6 from the local and wider area. The school vision, ‘Working together to be the best that we can be - Ka mahinga pai tatou ki te tino matau’ leads school.

Ohaeawai School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

  • Cultural Connections – develop a culturally inclusive school community where all children, parents and whānau feel valued and welcome.
  • Environmental Education – prioritise environmental learning opportunities for students.
  • Powerful Learning – ensure our curriculum meets the needs and aspirations of all our children, parents, whānau and staff.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Ohaeawai School’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how effective programmes, systems and processes are enabling all learners to be the best they can be.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is to support:

  • target students, especially in transition years, to accelerate their progress to their appropriate level
  • diverse learners to make progress with their learning
  • students to demonstrate agency in their learning and make progress over time.

The school expects to see equitable outcomes for all learners and:

  • most students making expected progress, and some making accelerated progress
  • students who know where they are in their learning and are able to voice their next learning steps.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to evaluate how effectively programmes, systems and processes are enabling all learners to be the best they can be:

  • leadership and teaching teams who enact the school vision
  • whānau and school community are committed to and supportive of the school
  • children who have a strong sense of belonging to their school.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • investigating how best to show progress in learning in early literacy using a structured literacy programme
  • establishing systems that track diverse learners and their progress over time
  • reviewing the effectiveness of the Ohaeawai school graduate student profile matrix.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
