LatestTe Ara Huarau | School Profile Report
Background
This Profile Report was written within eight months of the Education Review Office and Oromahoe School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz
Context
Oromahoe School is in rural southern Bay of Islands and educates students in years 1 to 8. The school roll is growing. Since the introduction of an enrolment scheme this growth has steadied.
Oromahoe School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:
- Approaches to teaching – we will develop a relevant learner-centred curriculum based on inquiry.
- Connections – we will actively engage with our communities.
- Approaches to learning – we understand ourselves as a learner.
You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Oromahoe School’s website.
ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how effectively the school is developing genuine learning partnerships for whanau/families, students and teachers that will improve holistic outcomes for all learners.
The rationale for selecting this evaluation is to:
- strengthen learning partnerships with staff, students and the community that support all learners to be the best they can be
- align processes and practices that enable teachers and students to know their next learning goal.
The school expects to see:
- teachers who are alert to, and respond promptly to, the learning needs of all students
- improved learner outcomes for all students
- parents who have a greater understanding of their child’s progress and achievement over time.
Strengths
The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to developing genuine learning partnerships that will improve holistic outcomes for all learners:
- a stable staff who are open to learning and who know their students well
- the Oromahoe school learner profile
- a school culture that fosters positive relationships for all.
Where to next?
Moving forward, the school will prioritise:
- streamlining the use of assessment processes and practices to embed consistency across the school
- strengthening sharing of assessment information with parents and the school board and how they will contribute to improving outcomes for all learners
- trialing the teacher developed guidelines that aim to improve agency for students and what this looks like in practice in the classroom.
ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
