Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within fifteen months of the Education Review Office and Peria School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Peria School is located in the shadow of Maungataniwha, in the depths of Te Poho o Ngati Kāhu and beside the many sacred pā of Ōruru. It provides education for children in Years 1 to 8. Approximately 44 percent of learners identify as Māori. The school’s vision is “working in harmony to learn, create and grow”. This is demonstrated through the school values of kaitiakitanga, whakamanawanui, manaakitanga and ako.

Peria School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

  • Ako - To design a responsive Peria School curriculum that engages, challenges and inspires all ākonga
  • Taiao - To create a positive learning environment that promotes innovation, inclusiveness & sustainable practices.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Peria School’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate the effectiveness of school-wide initiatives to increase learners’ progress and achievement in mathematics.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is to ensure leaders and teachers draw from research-based teaching and learning approaches which promote improved engagement and excellent and equitable outcomes for learners.

The school expects to see:

  • accelerated progress and continuous improvement in learner outcomes
  • consistency of implementation and ongoing evaluation of the teaching and learning approaches and programmes used to improve learner outcomes.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to evaluate the effectiveness of school-wide initiatives to increase learners’ progress and achievement in mathematics:

  • refined conditions, actions and practices that promote learner wellbeing, resilience and optimism
  • a strength based collaborative culture based on high relational trust amongst all stakeholders including staff, learners, whānau and hapū
  • effective evaluative processes focused on continuous improvement in learner outcomes.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • targeted, consistent, and highly effective professional learning to enhance teacher capability in mathematics teaching and learning
  • embedding consistent and evidence-based mathematics programmes and practices across the school
  • continuing to strengthen teacher inquiry processes to ensure collective teacher capability, resulting in equitable and excellent outcomes for learners.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
