LatestTe Ara Huarau | School Profile Report
Background
This Profile Report was written within six months of the Education Review Office and Raurimu Avenue School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz
Context
Raurimu Avenue School is a small primary school catering for students in years 1 to 8 in Onerahi, Whāngarei.
ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how effectively the school is responding to the learning needs of all students and accelerating their progress and achievement.
The rationale for selecting this evaluation is to:
- to enable teachers to plan effectively for the learning requirements of the students
- build and develop consistent teaching practices
- a sense of urgency and maximise teaching and learning time
- raise achievement levels of all learners.
The school expects to see:
- teachers responding to the strengths and learning needs of all students
- teachers using assessment information effectively in their programme planning
- accelerated achievement outcomes for all students.
Strengths
The school can draw from the following strengths to support it in its goal to respond to the learning needs of all students and accelerating their progress and achievement:
- learners experience a welcoming and calm environment where they are valued.
Where to next?
Moving forward, the school will prioritise:
- developing a shared understanding of learning expectations among teachers
- consistently implementing effective teaching strategies to improve learning outcomes for students
- continuing to strengthen assessment practices to inform teaching practice and school direction.
ERO has concerns about
The capacity for, and sustainability of effective leadership and governance to bring about improved and sustainable school performance. This includes:
- the planning and delivery of a coherent, appropriate and relevant curriculum
- students being provided with sufficient, related opportunities to revisit and consolidate learning
- the use of relevant assessment tools to gather reliable achievement information
- the School Board ensuring that is meeting its legal and statutory roles and responsibilities.
Recommendation
Support has also been requested from the Ministry of Education to support the school to progress against the key improvement priorities identified.
To support the school’s improvement planning ERO will:
- monitor progress towards these improvement priorities termly
- work with the school to regularly report progress against the improvement priorities.
ERO’s next visit will focus on the development of key improvement priorities and regularly monitoring and reporting of progress.
ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
