Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within 9 months of the Education Review Office and Tangiteroria School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Tangiteroria School is between Dargaville and Whangārei . The school provides education for students in Years 1 to 8.

Tangiteroria School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are to:

  • engage students in their learning through an authentic and sustainable local curriculum
  • build collaborative relationships that connect and reflect the community
  • promote a ‘culture of care’ that reflects the school values, learner identity and wellbeing.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Tangiteroria School’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how well the conditions support the acceleration and progress of priority learners in literacy.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is to:

  • identify and monitor the progress of priority learners in literacy
  • develop a shared understanding of acceleration and what the expected outcomes are for the school’s priority learners
  • ensure priority learners receive relevant learning experiences that meet their specific learning needs
  • encourage meaningful parent and whānau participation in their child’s learning.

The school expects to see priority learners making accelerated and sustained progress in literacy. Students will be supported in their learning with teachers using effective literacy approaches consistently to cater for individual learning needs. The school and whānau will engage in reciprocal learning-centred relationships that enable priority learners to experience personal success and achieve positive outcomes.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to improve the progress and achievement of priority learners in literacy:

  • learners experience a rich, broad and responsive localised curriculum that responds to their cultures and identities
  • school leadership collaboratively promotes the school vision and values, and prioritises and plans for equitable and excellent outcomes for all learners
  • students consistently demonstrate a strong sense of belonging and connection to the school.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • building on effective teaching practice to support priority learners to make accelerated and sustained progress in literacy
  • implementing professional learning for staff in literacy to extend and enhance teaching and learning programmes
  • continuing to review and revise strategies to ensure interventions meet the specific needs of priority learners.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
