Te Rangi Aniwaniwa is located in Awanui, Kaitaia. They provide Māori immersion education for tamariki in Years 1–15. The kura is founded on the philosophies of Te Aho Matua and the reo and tikanga of Muriwhenua.

4 Findings

Te Ira Tangata

He kākano i ruia mai i Rangātea, e kore ia e ngaro

Tamariki value identity as uri of Muriwhenua. They confidently lead in the classroom and in the community. Tamariki enthusiastically participate in learning that connects them to their tūrangawaewae and taiao. They use questioning for clarification of kōrero tuku iho to emerge as repositories of Muriwhenua kōrero tuku iho. Kaimahi and tribal experts provide tamariki with rich experiences that strengthens their understanding of tribal stories through intergenerational transmission of knowledge. Tamariki are proud guardians of their heritage.

Te Reo Māori

Tamariki demonstrate an eager attitude to learning and using te reo Māori. Manawa rahi, a kura-wide commitment ensures te reo Māori remains a living and empowering force, enabling tamariki to lead with confidence and take pride in their Māoritanga. Explicit teaching of te reo Māori is incorporated into the learning programme. Waiata, karakia, and purākau support tamariki in developing their reoWhānau and tamariki regularly attend kura reo exposing them to puna kōrero of the rohe and reinforcing the distinct tribal nuances. Raukura are returning to the kura as kaimahi who, along with pakeke and whānau normalise the use of te reo Māori in day-to-day life. Tamariki are well supported to grow their use and understanding of te reo o Muriwhenua.

Ngā Iwi

Te piko o te mahuri, tērā te tupu o te rākau

Tamariki display positive, reciprocal relationships with whānau, hapū, and iwi through deeply embedded cultural practices. The marautanga is grounded in local tikanga and whakapapa fostering deep connections and shared responsibility for tamariki success. Cultural, historical, and political experiences are an integral part of their hapori with tamariki and whānau contributing and leading in these areas. This enhances their connection and knowledge of Muriwhenua history. Whānau and iwi aspirations are centred on growing confident tamariki who uphold their reo, tikanga, and whakapapa who champion Te Whakaputanga, Te Tiriti o Waitangi and hīkoi whenua. Tamariki are empowered to succeed in te ao Māori as competent contributors to their marae, hapū, and iwi.   

Te Ao

Ka pū te ruha, ka hao te rangatahi

Tamariki explore Muriwhenuatanga through a holistic approach that fosters their identity and cultural pride. The unique landscapes of Te Hiku o Te Ika are integrated into teaching, connecting students to their taiao, encouraging respect for their surroundings as kaitiakiWharekura participate in experiences at whare wānanga and have opportunities to participate in work experience developing essential skills for their future. Beyond the curriculum, tamariki are proud exponents of manu kōrero, waka ama, and kapa haka, participating in local and national competitions. Whānau acknowledge and value the localised knowledge their tamariki gain through the opportunities to learn at kura and within the haporiTamariki are emerging as culturally rich and prepared to lead in both te ao Māori and beyond. 

Āhuatanga Ako

Tamariki wāwāhi tahā, aratakina ki te mātāpuna o te mōhio, o te ora, o te maungārongo

Authentic curriculum content and learning experiences ensure high level of student engagement. Kaiako foster an affirming, inclusive environment where tamariki engage in a variety of learning experiences. Kura wide planning is well structured with collaborative discussions for teaching and learning taking place that promotes tamariki success. Kaiako know tamariki well and prepare deliberate lessons for full engagement and participation. Progress is closely monitored, with targeted support for tamariki requiring further assistance. Academic achievement information for tamariki from Years 1–8 shows that the significant majority are meeting curriculum expectations. Tamariki in the Wharekura begin their National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) journey in Years 9 and 10. Over the last three years, tamariki undertaking NCEA Levels 1-3 have a success rate between 90-100%. The 2023 and 2024 NCEA Level 1 results for literacy and numeracy show tamariki achieving very well with 100% achievement rates. Tamariki are confident, capable and successful learners. 

Whānau Whakahaere and Leadership

Leadership collaboratively develops and pursues the kura vision and mission. The tumuaki upholds and models the values of the kura and mātāpono of Te Aho Matua. Leadership roles and responsibilities within the kura have been clearly defined with kaimahi supported to grow into new roles. This distributed leadership approach and data-informed decision-making creates a responsive environment. Teaching, learning, engagement and wellbeing are regularly monitored by pou ārahi. Kaimahi work collaboratively to build a support system that shows high expectations and outcomes. Leadership support kaimahi to continue to develop their knowledge and skills in marau through regular discussions and professional support. Cultural expression and tamariki-led leadership are actively fostered with the kāhui Kahurangi, elected tamariki representatives providing tamariki voice. They are involved in designing initiatives, leading and planning wānanga, showing their voice and leadership are grounded in who they are and where they come from. Tamariki are empowered as active contributors and leaders, resulting in a mana-enhancing culture where everyone is equipped to grow, contribute, and thrive.

Whāia te tino rangatiratanga

Te Rangi Āniwaniwa poari and whānau are guided by their four pou that align to their vision of tikanga, Muriwhenuatanga, oranga and tamariki. The poari exhibits a proactive, tamariki-centred governance role ensuring operational decisions support both learning and wellbeing. The poari comprises of elected whānau representatives, tumuaki, and iwi partners. Their collective experience ensures they are culturally grounded; their strategic decision-making reflects the principles of Te Aho Matua, and the aspirations of the kura whānau are considered and implemented. The poari has prioritised resourcing their strategic objectives that supports tamariki wellbeing and academic success. Their governance practices include compliance with regulations through robust self-review processes. Tamariki achievement and attendance is well tracked with achievement goals set kura wide. Tamariki benefit from decision-making that is well considered to realise tamariki full potential.  

Key Next Steps

The kura identified the need to sustain self-review processes, with on-going developments for succession planning as areas of importance. This evaluation supports kura identified areas of improvement with a further need to effectively implement emergency evacuation drills. Sustained self-review enhances positive outcomes for tamariki.

5 Whānau Assurance on Legal Requirement

Before the review, the board of trustees and principal completed the ERO Whānau Assurance Statement and Self-Audit Checklists. In these documents they attested that they had taken all reasonable steps to meet their legislative obligations related to:

  • board administration
  • curriculum
  • management of health, safety and welfare
  • personnel management
  • financial management
  • asset management.

During the review, ERO checked the following items because they have a potentially high impact on tamariki achievement:

  • emotional safety of tamariki (including prevention of bullying and sexual harassment)
  • physical safety of tamariki
  • teacher registration
  • processes for appointing staff
  • stand-downs, suspensions, expulsions and exclusions
  • attendance.

6 Recommendation

ERO recommend that the kura continues to sustain self-review processes and take all measures to ensure the key next step is addressed.
