Background
This Profile Report was written within 12 months of the Education Review Office and Bayswater School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. Context
Bayswater Primary School is located in Bayswater, North Shore, Auckland and provides education for students from Years 0 to 6. A new senior leadership team has been operational for a year. A refurbishment of the school’s internal environments is soon to be completed.
The school hosts two satellite classes for Wilson Specialist School and part of the Devonport-Takapuna Kāhui Ako.
Bayswater School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:
-
Whakawhanaungatanga - Celebrate our diverse and inclusive culture
-
Ako - Inspire and engage tamariki to be their best
-
Whanaungatanga - Build on our positive professional relationships.
You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Bayswater School’s website.
ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how well schoolwide mathematical programmes enable culturally responsive teaching and learning through problem solving to ensure equitable and excellent outcomes for all learners.
The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:
-
schoolwide equitable outcomes for all tamariki within a strength-based approach
-
professional development in effective teaching and learning pedagogical approaches, previously developed through school literacy, was successful in improving the progress and achievement for all tamariki
-
building effective teaching and learning strategies through a culturally responsive lens, in adaptive ways, to promote equitable and excellent outcomes for all tamariki.
The school expects to see kaiako transferring proven successful pedagogical approaches and programmes, that enable equitable and excellent outcomes for all tamariki in mathematics.
Strengths
The school can draw from the following strengths to support the goal to evaluate how well schoolwide mathematical programmes enable culturally responsive teaching and learning through problem solving to ensure equitable and excellent outcomes for all learners:
-
tamariki experience a school learning culture, that is consistently positive and promotes their learning engagement
-
leadership actively seeks, adapts and implements teaching and learning strategies to support school priorities
-
strong partnerships with community and whānau, with well-established respectful relationships.
Where to next?
Moving forward, the school will prioritise:
-
a consistent pedagogical approach across the school that ensures best practice is utilised by all kaiako
-
developing effective processes for monitoring, evaluating and accelerating ākonga progress.
ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
