Background

Context

Bucklands Beach Intermediate is a large culturally diverse school catering for students in Year 7 and 8 in Bucklands Beach, Auckland.  The school offers the International Baccalaureate framework that aims to build inquiry, knowledgeable caring young people who think globally and act locally.

Bucklands Beach Intermediate school’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are: 

  • Academic Progress – each student has access to an appropriate curriculum is engaged in the learning process and shows maximum progress
  • Teaching and Learning – deliver best pedagogical practices through developing best possible staff
  • Resourcing – it is essential that physical, financial and structural resources are aligned with targeted areas
  • Community Connections and Inclusivity – all associated with BBI will commit to a sense of belonging, where uniqueness is celebrated, fostering team involvement and whānau.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how well Learning Portfolios impact on all students developing self-direction and make a positive difference to their progress and achievement over their two years at the school.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is continuing to:

  • enable students to attain the highest standards possible
  • develop students’ sense of self-direction and responsibility for their own learning
  • build responsive learning partnerships with parents, whānau and community.

The school expects to see:

  • teaching and learning practices that effectively engage and challenge students
  • students able to articulate their learning journey and progress over their two years at school
  • leaders and teachers promoting and sharing learning successes with parents, whānau and the community.

The school can draw from the following strengths to support it in its goal to evaluate how well the learning portfolio makes a positive difference to students' progress and achievement over their two years at school.

  • a strong sense of pride and belonging contributes to student and staff wellbeing.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise continuing to:

  • build collective capability and practice of staff through relevant professional learning and development
  • enhance learning-focussed relationships with parents and whānau so they are active partners in their child’s learning
  • to develop connections within the community to care for our local environment.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community.
