LatestTe Ara Huarau | School Profile Report
Background
This Profile Report was written within 6 months of the Education Review Office and Churchill Park School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz
Context
Churchill Park School is in Glendowie, Auckland. It provides education for students in Years 0 to 8. The school empowers students to “Stand-tall, Aim High,” which nurtures their self-belief and encourages their passions. Academic success and curriculum excellence are valued outcomes.
Churchill Park School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:
- Thriving Learning – Ako. Continue to provide academic rigor, high-quality professional development for staff and design /development of the local curriculum.
- Thriving People – Tangata. Foster stronger partnerships, develop a strong sense of identity.
- Thriving Place – Rohe. Build stronger connections with our local community.
You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Churchill Park School’s website.
ERO and the school are working together to evaluate the design and implementation of a localised curriculum, as underpinned by Te Mātaiaho (the refreshed NZ Curriculum).
The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:
- the school is undertaking a significant body of work to develop and implement a local curriculum
- teachers are continuing to develop their knowledge of Te Mātaiaho through professional learning and participating in ongoing curriculum development.
The school expects to see:
- increased student engagement in a localised curriculum, that reflects their community and their place in the world
- the rich local knowledge and history are integrated throughout the curriculum
- teaching staff who are confident to deliver a high-quality school curriculum.
Strengths
The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal of ensuring the design and implementation of a localised curriculum:
- a well-established learning culture that is characterised by authentic, positive relationships
- well supported teachers who undertake professional learning opportunities to grow their practice
- school-wide leadership that is passionate, collaborative and committed to continuous improvement.
Where to next?
Moving forward, the school will prioritise:
- collaboratively planned, engaging and well-balanced learning opportunities that reflect the local area
- targeted professional development that supports ongoing curriculum development
- using evaluation and inquiry to monitor and strengthen the delivery of a localised curriculum.
ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
