LatestTe Ara Huarau | School Profile Report
Background
This Profile Report was written within 9 months of the Education Review Office and Dairy Flat School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz
Context
Dairy Flat School is north of Auckland and caters for learners from Years 1 to 6. The school’s values of being respectful, responsible, resilient, considerate, honest and fair support the vision and the holistic growth and wellbeing of students and staff.
Dairy Flat School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:
- learning/akoranga - to foster the success of every child
- wellbeing/hauora - to ensure the safety and enhance the wellness of our school community
- collaboration/mahi tahi - to collaborate, prioritise learner-focussed relationships and build positive community connections
- infrastructure/hanganga - to ensure that all our students and staff thrive in an effective learning environment.
You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Dairy Flat School’s website.
ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how effectively the school’s literacy programme is meeting the needs of students and raising achievement for all learners.
The rationale for selecting this evaluation is to:
- raise student achievement for all learners to meet the Board, community and staff expectations
- ensure that professional development is focused on raising literacy student achievement specifically those learners who are at risk of not achieving.
The school expects to see:
- learners who are engaged and achieving successful outcomes by being able to talk about their progress, achievement and next learning steps
- teachers who are confidently using deliberate acts of teaching to improve literacy outcomes
- the board funding resources to support professional development.
Strengths
The school can draw from the following strengths to evaluate how effectively the literacy programme is meeting the needs of students and raising achievement for all learners.
- the school is committed to improving outcomes for all learners focusing on literacy
- staff that are open to new learning and development
- strong connections with the Kahui Ako and the wider community networks support learner success.
Where to next?
Moving forward, the school will prioritise:
- increasing literacy resources to support new strategies for the delivery of reading and writing
- developing school wide curriculum expectations to inform assessment and robust moderation processes
- developing student agency so learners can talk about where they are achieving, progressing and their next steps to improve.
ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
