Background

This Profile Report was written within 12 months of the Education Review Office and Glen Eden Intermediate working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Glen Eden Intermediate School provides education for students in Years 7 and 8. The school’s values of respect, responsibility, integrity, and excellence are well embedded in school life.

Glen Eden Intermediate’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

  • supporting Glen Eden Intermediate School’s curriculum of coherent learning pathways and reflecting the priorities, preferences and needs of our community

  • realising the aspirations of all our learners with a focus on consultation with Māori whānau, hapu, iwi and parents, family, and community

  • working reciprocally with Māori and our diverse Pasifika communities

  • using pedagogical approaches that ensure the success of Māori and Pasifika learners.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Glen Eden Intermediate’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate equitable outcomes for learners.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is to:

  • strategically plan for equity for Māori and Pasifika learners

  • uphold our obligation to give full and systematic effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi

  • continually strengthen relationships and consult with our school community

  • improve learning outcomes for all our learners in response to the impact of Covid.

The school expects to see:

  • improved outcomes that are consistently equitable and excellent for all learners

  • school practices and actions that are inclusive and cater well for all learners, including a specific focus on Māori and Pasifika

  • robust, rigorous data collection and analysis along with student voice to inform practice

  • Glen Eden Intermediate School staff driving culturally sustaining practice.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support the school in its goals through:

  • robust Māori and Pasifika achievement plans that are reviewed and updated annually

  • participation in Kōtuitui Kāhui Ako led professional learning opportunities such as Te Wao nui a Tāne

  • a focus on community partnerships and culturally responsive and sustaining practice

  • an explicit focus on all learners experiencing deep learning in relation to te ao Māori, te reo Māori and mātauranga Māori through programmes such as Kaupapa on the Couch.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • consistently equitable and excellent learner progress and achievement for all learners

  • embedding systematic, collaborative inquiry and internal evaluation processes

  • giving full and systematic effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi

  • creating space for whānau agency and building confidence and capability through community consultation and partnerships.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
