Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within 21 months of the Education Review Office and Hillpark School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Hillpark School is in Manurewa and caters for learners in Years 1-6. Hillpark School’s vision for the diverse community it serves is ‘Aspire, Grow, Achieve’. A feature of the school includes ngāhere, native bush which is part of the learning environment.

Hillpark School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are to:

  • ensure teaching and learning excellence

  • be inclusive and encourage participation

  • be culturally responsive

  • promote learner and staff wellbeing.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Hillpark School’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate the extent to which learner and whānau perceptions and experiences are informing a responsive curriculum, and equitable and excellent outcomes for all learners.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:

  • the school vision ‘aspire, grow, achieve’ focuses on the success of all learners where decision making, and practice is responsive to evidence

  • local curriculum design responds to the aspirations of all learners, parents and whānau

  • culturally responsive teaching practices ensure all learners see themselves reflected in the school environment.

The school expects to see all learners progressing and achieving towards equitable and excellent outcomes, with learner voice and whānau perceptions used as evidence to inform decision making.  Learners will be effectively supported by teachers, parents, whānau and community working in strengthened learning partnerships and collaboration.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support its evaluation goal:

  • leaders and teachers collaborate effectively for curriculum design review and refinement

  • teachers use appropriate assessment to support learners to make choices and decisions about their learning

  • professional development approaches are differentiated to enhance teaching capability.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • conducting learner experience and engagement surveys, and continue to modify professional development in response to the analysis of data

  • further in-depth analysis of the acceleration, progress and achievement of priority learners to determine next steps

  • utilising the aspirations of parents and whānau in decision making and teacher practice.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
