LatestTe Ara Huarau | School Profile Report
Background
This Profile Report was written within ten months of the Education Review Office and Mangatangi School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz
Context
Mangatangi School, located in the North Waikato, provides education for students in Years 0 – 8. The school strives to provide an enriched learning environment where students are encouraged to develop a ‘THIRST’ for learning. At Mangatangi School, students ‘live rural, learn local and think global’.
Mangatangi School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are to ensure:
-
all students progress and achieve their highest possible educational potential
-
Māori students enjoy educational success as Māori
-
the school and wider community engage in supporting our students in their learning, growth and development as young people.
You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Mangatangi School’s website.
ERO and the school are working together to evaluate the extent to which the curriculum is responding to student need, and learning-focused partnerships are being strengthened to promote excellent and equitable outcomes.
The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:
-
close alignment with the school’s strategic plan
-
the acute need to tailor the curriculum to the needs of students in the post-pandemic environment
-
the opportunity to use evaluation findings to inform ongoing refinements to teaching and learning.
The school expects to see equitable and excellent student outcomes resulting from:
-
a curriculum that responds effectively to learner needs as identified through analysis of student achievement information
-
strengthened, learning-focused partnerships promoting whānau engagement in the learning journey
-
data being used to unpack the impact of improvement actions and to inform ongoing refinements to the curriculum.
Strengths
The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to ensure all students reach their potential:
-
positive relationships that support connection and engagement
-
a school environment that is focused on promoting student wellbeing
-
leadership at all levels that actively pursues the school’s vision and values.
Where to next?
Moving forward, the school will prioritise:
-
continuing to build teacher capacity to use student achievement information to identify learning needs and to respond to those needs with targeted planning
-
establishing educational partnerships with parents and whānau to enable them to play an active role in their child’s learning
-
using information about student progress to track the impact of improvement actions and understand what is working for who.
ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
