Context
Maungawhau School is located in Mt Eden, Auckland catering for Year 0 – 6 learners/ākonga. The school’s vision to ‘Shape our Future’, is premised on the school’s core values of caring, working together, keeping on trying and challenging what learners do.
Maungawhau School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

high aspirations for all ākonga wellbeing and progress

begin the implementation of the refreshed NZ Curriculum underpinned by cultural responsiveness and delivering education that responds to ākonga learning needs.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how well the school’s culturally sustaining, localised curriculum develops and embeds the New Zealand Curriculum Refresh, whilst maintaining high levels of achievement, progress and ākonga success.
The rationale for selecting this evaluation is a localised curriculum that is adaptive and responsive to ākonga needs through:

programmes that sustain ākonga culture, language, and identity

high levels of engagement from ākonga and their families, and the wider community
-
staff professionalism through engagement in professional learning opportunities ensures teachers and learning assistants look for innovative ways to meet ākonga needs

milestone evaluations of literacy, numeracy, and mental health strategies
-
a collaborative and supportive learning environment that considers wellbeing for all.
The school expects to see:

core strategic goals actioned through an internal evaluation process

development of the New Zealand Curriculum methodology through the Maungawhau localised curriculum and school’s progressions of learning

continued strong leadership and coaching to build and support teacher capability with a particular focus on building cultural capability to tell the school’s story through a Te Ao Māori lens

continued engagement with whānau and the wider community focused on supporting ākonga to be successful in who they are.

Where to next?
Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

evaluating the impact of maths and literacy changes and how those curriculum changes support learning progress

establishing the school’s story through a te ao Māori focus – supporting ākonga, staff and families to understand the school’s history.
ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community.
