LatestTe Ara Huarau | School Profile Report
Background
This Profile Report was written within 5 months of the Education Review Office and Meadowbank School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz
Context
Meadowbank School is a large central Auckland school which caters for children in Years 1 to 6. There are over 750 students enrolled at the school. The school values student academic success, personal aspiration, and contributing positively to the world around them.
Meadowbank School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:
- Develop and empower teachers to deliver a stimulating, well-balanced education that reflects our aspirations and values.
- Challenge and support all our students to reach their potential through authentic rich learning experiences.
You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Meadowbank School’s website.
ERO and the school are working together to evaluate the implementation of Te Mātaiaho (the Refreshed Curriculum) and the impact it has on learning experiences and outcomes for all students.
The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:
- design, development and implementation of the school curriculum is a significant and important body of work that has wide reaching implications over time
- curriculum development aligns with the school’s current strategic priorities
- curriculum knowledge and design are a professional requirement for teachers which includes ongoing curriculum development.
The school expects to see:
- each aspect of the NZ curriculum and associated assessments embedded in teaching and learning practice
- staff who are confident to design and deliver high-quality learning experiences that enriches and extends all learners
- a localised curriculum which is balanced and ensures coverage over a students’ time at Meadowbank school.
Strengths
The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal of designing and implementing Te Mātaiaho (Refreshed Curriculum).
- teachers are well supported to undertake professional learning to further enhance their practice
- students experience an inclusive learning environment that is consistently positive and promotes engagement, innovation, and achievement
- school-wide leadership that utilises collaborative inquiry and internal monitoring to ensure that there is a focus on continuous improvement.
Where to next?
Moving forward, the school will prioritise:
- targeted professional development, both internally and externally led, which focuses on knowledge and embedding of the refreshed Mathematics, English and Aotearoa New Zealand Histories curriculums
- teachers using evaluation, inquiry, and collaborative approaches to strengthen teaching practice and ensure school-wide consistency
- ongoing monitoring and evaluation to promote and build excellence and equity for all students.
ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
