Background
This Profile Report was written within ten months of the Education Review Office and Mt Carmel School (Meadowbank) working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. Context
Mt Carmel School in Meadowbank, Auckland is a state integrated school, catering for children in Years 1 to 6. A new principal was appointed to the school at the beginning of 2022.
Mt Carmel School (Meadowbank)’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

all students are provided with opportunities to progress and succeed in the pursuit of our National Curriculum

recruit, develop and retain highest quality personnel
-
to have in place effective analysis and measurement processes to accurately monitor and report on progress and achievements.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how effective the localised curriculum is in meeting the needs of all children.
The rationale for selecting this evaluation is to:

increase student agency in student learning

ensure consistent teaching practice across the school

improve the connection between learning progressions and continuity of practice

strengthen the school’s cultural practice
The school expects to see:

children who know what they are learning and their next steps.

a coherent localised curriculum competently implemented across the school

an increase in consultation with the various community groups in the school

the diverse cultures of the school celebrated more frequently.

The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to evaluate how effective the localised curriculum is in meeting the needs of all children.

the senior leadership team enact the school vision successfully.
Where to next?
Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

continuing to monitor and respond to the needs of students, especially priority learners

developing processes and documentation to support teachers to plan collaboratively
-
working with whānau and families from the various ethnicities to begin establishing small cultural groups.
ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
