Subjects for Year 9 Students

Year 10 Dance

10DAN

The Dance programme includes a range of creative and responsive aspects in addition to the practical and technical components. The emphasis is not just on imitation but also on creation and allowing students to express their own ideas, further developing their enthusiasm for the study of dance. They will learn the elements and devices of dance to broaden their movement vocabulary and will have the opportunity to explore and develop choreography and performance skills through a variety of genres including Contemporary, Hip Hop, Ballet, Bollywood and Disco. A range of skills associated with viewing and responding to dance performance will also be introduced. Students will work both individually and together, enhancing their confidence in themselves and building on their communication and group work skills.

Year 10 Design & Visual Communications

10DVC

This is a two term course. 

Students will learn about the importance of being able to visually communicate design thinking. Learning specific drawing methods, understanding and applying presentation techniques while working through the Technology design process. Design aesthetics and function are key to the learning that will take place here.


Year 10 Digital & Media Technologies

10DGT

This is a two term course.

Students will build on the Digital Technologies and Digital Media concepts covered in Year 9. A variety of interesting topics are offered which enable you to develop essential skills that are useful in a variety of careers. You will also be introduced to specialist topics such as design, media, software development and production which will give you the pathways into senior subjects. This includes learning to effectively use programs such as the Adobe Creative Cloud suite, designing and developing an app, learning to program robots, using the equipment in the Maker Space to create interesting outcomes.


Year 10 Drama

10DRA

Drama aims to develop students' creativity, collaboration and self management alongside core performance skills. This course will explore the key aspects and terminology of drama and students will learn how they fit within performance. Students are encouraged to think and reflect on their own and the work of others through the creation of performance and viewing live theatre. Students will also explore the perspectives and experiences of others, increasing their cultural awareness, responsiveness and acceptance. In Drama we foster an environment where students' confidence can grow and develop. The nature of the work in Drama is group based. Throughout the term students will develop at least two performances, one devised from stimulus and one scripted text. Students will also have opportunities to explore technological aspects of drama such as set, props, costume and lighting.


Year 10 English

10ENG

English encompasses learning about both language and literature, including novels, short stories, poetry and film.  Students will develop their reading, writing, viewing, presenting, speaking and listening skills.  Discovering how language works will enable students to communicate effectively for a range of purposes and using a variety of forms.

Year 10 English as a Second Language

10ESL

The Year 10 course is intended to further increase the students’ skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing English.

Vocabulary will be expanded beyond the First 1000 Word list into the Second 1000 Word list. Students will also be helped to prepare for the challenges of NCEA in Year 11 by discovering their learning styles and how best to learn as well as methods for learning vocabulary and other literacy skills. The course is topic based including Settling in, Special Occasions and Festivals, Fashion, Earning and Spending, and Careers.


Year 10 Fashion and Design

This is a two term course. 

Through this course students will have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the basics of Fashion and Design Using various stages of the Technology process students will delve into and upskill in communicating design, fabric selection, textile design and specific practical skills required to produce successful outcomes.


Year 10 Food Technology

10TFO

This is a two term course.

Throughout this course, students will design and develop new food products for clients other than themselves. This learning will have a more thorough look at the design process,  from a brief and specifications to an end product.

Students will learn about:

  • The properties and nutritional value of different foods and how they can be used, e.g. meat, dairy, fruit, vegetables and grain products.
  • Healthy meal planning.
  • Development of a wide range of practical skills to provide a base for future study or life skills.
  • Projects include the development of a healthy family meal and designing and making a Gingerbread house.


Year 10 Language

Year 10 Mathematics

10MAT

This subject covers algebra, graphs, geometry, measurement, number, probability, statistics and trigonometry. Mathematics helps students to think numerically, and to develop logical, sequential thinking along with problem solving. Skills needed in a changing work place and in most areas of study. Statistics develops students’ statistical literacy, a skill that is needed to correctly interpret media releases and information relating to students areas of interest.

Year 10 Music

Music studies help develop language and reasoning, imagination and intellectual curiosity.

The new economy has created more artistic careers and Music study helps prepare students to work collaboratively and creatively in the 21st workforce. You will

Year 10 Physical Education and Health

In year 10, students will have two lessons of Health and two lessons of Physical Education across their 10 day timetable. 

Health

This subject involves a study of personal well-being, understanding issues in health, nutrition, relationships and decision making. It encourages students to take responsibility and critical action to promote personal well-being and healthy communities.

Physical Education

This subject involves a study of personal well-being, physical movement, exercise and interpersonal skills as well as participation in physical activities. Students will develop motor-skills across a range of activities, develop a vast range of teamwork skills and experience a range of roles and responsibilities within movement contexts. 


Year 10 Science

10SCI

We aim to spark curiosity and make Science as hands-on as possible. We are integrating digital technologies into our curriculum to enhance their experience of Science and provide opportunities for a wide range of learning styles and preferences. The curriculum is designed to help students make sense of the world around them, studying a broad range of theme-based topics which integrate the four Science learning areas. Topics include Pass on my legacy, Power play, Atomic adventures, and Earth shakers. We also encourage learning outside the classroom with field trips allowing students to see Science in action.

Year 10 Social and Religious Education

10SRE

In the Religious Education programme, our faith, its values and its meaning are explored at different levels throughout the school. We integrate our learning with Social Studies. This enables us to take the values of our faith and the Charism of RNDM and apply it practically, using contexts related to ourselves and our community. 

Learning occurs in our innovative learning environments. Students undertake investigations of issues which integrate Religious Education, Social Studies and Aotearoa New Zealand Histories content and concepts. SRE aims to inspire curiosity about the world and develop our students to be people of Mission, prepared to make changes in the world.

Our learning is completed through a series of four "Learning Challenges" (LC's) across the year.

Each year our focus is either The Power of People or The Power of Place.


Year 10 Visual Art

The Visual Arts course at year 10 aims to develop students’ creativity, confidence and critical thinking while also giving students a solid artistic skill set. Units will allow students to develop their practical knowledge of drawing, painting and printmaking. Students will look to both contemporary and traditional artists to further their own understanding of how and why art is made, interpreted and valued. Helping them to critically process and understand the visual information all around them.

Each student will be offered the opportunity to gain up to 15 credits in Level 1 Catering and Hospitality.

This is a Unit Standards course.

Unit standards are studied as part of Catering and Hospitality, which develop student knowledge and skills.  The focus is on developing practical skills and familiarity in a kitchen. using a wide range of foods, techniques and terminology, this course is a good basis for Level 2 and 3 Catering and Hospitality.

Level 1 Commerce

This is the beginning of The Exchange / Te Tauhokohoko pathway – where big ideas start small. 

Level 1 Dance

In this course students will choreograph dance works, perform dance sequences and view/respond to dance performance across a range of different genres/styles of dance; for example, jazz, contemporary and Hip Hop. 

Students will perform in our senior dance showcase in Term 3. 


Level 1 Design & Visual Communication

Each student will be offered the opportunity to gain up to 15 credits in Level 1 Design and Visual Communication.

Design and Visual Communication is a course designed to challenge design thinking and engage with decision-making that is connected to people, places, cultures, and design knowledge in developing design outcomes. Students will be exposed to both spatial and product design all while developing visual communication skills to generate and explore ideas beyond first thoughts.


Students will:

Learn how to generate ideas and design innovative outcomes, through a process of divergent and convergent design. Experimenting with ideas that explore multiple possibilities using both aesthetics and function at the core of their design work.




Level 1 Digital Technologies

This course lays a strong foundation in Digital Technology, equipping students with essential skills and knowledge that will benefit them beyond school. Students will design and build a game, learn Python programming, and experience the software design process. Additionally, they have the option to complete an external module focused on human-computer interaction. The diverse topics covered in this course provide students with excellent basic computer skills and cater to those interested in pursuing a specialized career in Digital Technologies.

Level 1 Drama

Students will have the opportunity to earn up to 15 credits in Level 1 Drama.

This course is designed to enhance students' confidence, reflective thinking, performance, and collaboration skills. Emphasising whanaungatanga, students will build strong, supportive relationships within the class, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose. The principles of manaakitanga will also be central to the course, promoting an environment of care, respect, and mutual support.

Students will gain practical experience by applying key components of drama to both scripted and self-devised performances. Throughout the year, they will engage in workshop sessions with local theatre practitioners, offering valuable industry insights. Additionally, students will attend live theatre performances, learning to critically analyze and reflect on their experiences.

This course builds on the skills that you have been working on over the last two years.  You will explore a range of written and visual texts and also develop your writing skills which will help across a range of subjects.  


Level 1 English as a Second Language

The course is for students who have English as an additional language. It aims to increase students’ competency in the four skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. There is a focus on academic vocabulary which will help you achieve greater success with your other subjects, as well as writing different types of texts, in preparation for the CAA Literacy exam. Students have the opportunity to gain some English Language unit standard credits at Level 1 or 2.


Level 1 Fashion and Design

Each student will be offered the opportunity to gain up to 15 credits in Level 1 Fashion and Design.

The Fashion and Design course allows students to further their skills in Technology. Students will develop an understanding of design techniques with application of these skills while providing learning around the impact the Fashion industry has on our everyday lives. Sustainability, understanding traditional and contemporary design, materials and techniques will be at the forefront of the design work here.

Level 1 French

This course aims to broaden students’ knowledge of the language. Level 1 General Science

Level 1 German

This course aims to broaden students’ knowledge of the language. Level 1 Health

Each student will be offered the opportunity to gain up to 15 credits in Level 1 Health Studies across both internal and external achievement standards. 

This course involves a study of personal well-being through exploring holistic models of health. Students will develop an understanding of current issues related to nutrition, mental health and relationships and learn how a range of factors influence hauora. 

Students will review effective communication, relationship and decision making skills along with considering Māori and Pacific knowledge bases, values, and practices related to hauora and wellbeing. 

This course encourages students to develop an understanding that a variety of health-promotion actions are needed at personal, interpersonal, and societal levels to enhance hauora.  Through Health Studies students will explore diverse ways to manage change situations that have an impact on wellbeing.

Each student will be offered the opportunity to gain up to 15 credits in Level 1 Music.

 Music is a fundamental form of expression, both personal and cultural.

Standards include opportunities for developing skills in :

    - Performance (solo or group - can include Kapahaka, Pasifika, Rockquest, Barbershop, Chamber music, Guitar ensembles, Jazz Band)

    - Composition (collaboratively or by yourself)

    - Aural (listening)

     - Music Technology (Soundtrap, Falt.io)

    - Music Literacy (Theory)

    - Analysis

Please note Performance is not compulsory and can be 

    1) in front of friends or whānau

    2) at a festival such as Rockquest

Level 1 Photography & Design

The emphasis for this course is on practical study, exploring a mixture of digital photography and design. Students will embark on an exciting journey where they will learn about photography and photographic conventions. They will then use their images as a resource base for the exploration of design ideas and conventions. The creative, expressive and technical skills developed in this programme will be directly beneficial for future Art options. 

Note: Students MUST have an adobe capable laptop to complete this course. They MUST download Adobe creative cloud to then download Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator on their personal device. An adobe license will be included in the course fee. If their device cannot handle this software and a new device is not provided by the end of week 3, Term 1 they will be removed from this course.

 


Level 1 Physical Education

Each student will be offered the opportunity to gain up to 15 credits in Level 1 Physical Education across both internal and external achievement standards.

The aim of this course is to give students a broad foundation of knowledge in multiple topics relating to Physical Education through both theory and practical lessons. 

Students will learn about how movement affects themselves and others, understand factors that affect participation, interpersonal skills and the strategies needed when working together, strategies to improve performance in a Net Games movement context and how being physically active improves wellbeing. 

Level 1 PE students will engage in a range of localised trips and activities throughout the year including a camp, a rogaine or orienteering activity, group ABL whanaungatanga games and fitness experiences at local gyms and facilities.

Level 1 Practical Art

This course is designed for students who want to explore their creativity and build practical skills in various artistic mediums. Building on skills developed in Year 10 Art, students will engage in a range of practical activities, including drawing, painting, printmaking and photography. The course provides a strong foundation in visual arts and prepares students for specialized senior courses in Painting, Design, and/or Photography. Level 1 Social Science

Level 1 Social Science is a combination subject that enables you to delve into Geography, History and Social Studies. 

Social Studies is the first stage of the Human Worlds / Te Ao Tangata pathway and explores how people shape, and are shaped by place, time, and society helping students understand the past, the present, and global connections.

You’ll explore real places, hear real stories, and take real action. Whether it’s walking on a volcano, meeting the locals, uncovering untold histories, or creating change in your own community - this is learning that’s hands-on, meaningful, and shaped by your interests.

This course is assessed using three Achievement Standards: One from History, one Geography and one Social Studies. 

Level 1 Spanish

Each student will be offered the opportunity to gain up to 15 credits in Level 1 Spanish. They will choose between one of the two internals.

This course aims to broaden students’ knowledge of the language. Topics around familiar contexts such as self-descriptions, family, home, school, freetime and travel and holidays form the basis for students to understand and produce simple to more complex Spanish in written and spoken forms. In doing so they will gain communication skills, critical thinking, knowledge of grammar and the cultural awareness required in today’s global world.


Level 1 Te Ao Māori

Te Reo Māori Level 1

Each student will be offered the opportunity to gain up to 15 credits in Level 1 Te Reo Māori.

Across all curriculum level (6-8) tauira will;

understand their contribution to the revitalisation of the language for the good of the collective • connect with those outside the classroom to explore and learn from the community and from examples of Māori success • practise and enjoy experimenting with a wide range of spoken, written, and visual communication in te reo Māori • explore the key values of Māori culture and Māori principles embedded in the language • explore how language and culture affect, and work together in, communication.

By the end of NCEA Level 1, students can explore te reo Māori commonly used to express personal information, ideas, and opinions in everyday contexts, expand their linguistic strategies and use resources effectively to make meaning from unfamiliar language, expand their linguistic strategies and use resources effectively to make meaning from unfamiliar language.

Level 1-3 offers students the opportunity to strengthen their language skills, cultural knowledge, and identity. Through learning and using te reo, students develop communication skills in both spoken and written forms, gain a deeper understanding of tikanga Maaori, and build confidence in engaging with Maaori contexts.

Gateway

GATE

The Gateway programme enables Year 12 and 13 students to access workplace learning, integrated with school-based learning around work-ready skills. Students work closely with the Gateway coordinator to gain an understanding of the workforce by completing a placement in their area of interest and developing an understanding of their values, qualities and skills. 

Gateway has 2 main parts:

1. A work placement based on the individual student's interests and possible career pathway.

2. Classes at school looking at work-ready skills, including learning about career pathway planning (e.g. CV writing and interview skills), communication and interpersonal skills, employment rights etc.

Students will also complete a First Aid course and Health and Safety course with an outside provider to gain the relevant certificate.

Level 1 Spanish

Each student will be offered the opportunity to gain up to 15 credits in Level 1 Spanish. They will choose between one of the two internals.

This course aims to broaden students’ knowledge of the language. Level 2 Accounting

Accounting is the study of the processes of translating financial transaction data into information to assist decision-makers to make relevant, accurate and timely decisions.  The aim of this course is to introduce students to manual and computer methods of recording accounting data and to provide them with a clear basic understanding of financial reports and their components. The course will assist students to understand the accounting principles and processes involved in designing an accounting sub-system, accounting for cash, accounts receivable, accounts payable, inventory and property, plant, and equipment. Students will prepare and analyse financial statements for decision making. This is more than spreadsheets; it’s about real-world thinking and future-focused skills. This course will benefit students in any career they choose.

Level 2 Biology

Level 2 Biology focuses on cell biology, genetics, gene expression, ecology and provides students with the necessary practical skills needed to carry on in any career in Science. Knowledge of these concepts is a requirement for many careers, for example, in the medical field, environmental science, horticulture and animal studies.


Level 2 Business Studies

This course is focused on the internal and external factors which affect large New Zealand businesses. This is an experiential learning course where students form a business and come up with a product idea to take it to market. This course investigates entrepreneurship and covers marketing, production, finance and human resources. Students will carry out market research and develop & refine a business plan. The internal operations of a large business will be studied which will cover organisational structure, leaders & managers, production processes, finance, policies & procedures and corporate social responsibility. 

Level 2 Catering & Hospitality

This is a Unit Standard course.

Catering and Hospitality offers a unique opportunity for students to develop their knowledge and extend their skills within hospitality and catering in a vocational context. It is a suitable qualification for those who want a broad background in this area and for those who wish to progress to further education or the world of work. It is expected that students will be involved in competition work and catering for events.

It is anticipated that a further unit standard will be completed at WINTEC worth 4 credits.

Level 2 Chemistry

Level 2 Child Development and Education

This course is designed to give students more knowledge and understanding of caring for infants, toddlers and young children. Students will study a range of Level 2 Plunket unit standards and gain practical in-class experience. Where possible, students will also visit Jubilee ECE Centre to become familiar with the education needs of young children. This course is a good base for future tertiary study and employment, particularly for those interested in Early Childhood or Primary Teaching, Health Care, Nursing, Midwifery, Social and Community Services, Babysitting and Nannying.  Some of the areas of study include: child development and learning, basic needs and nutrition, health issues and services, safety practices and the importance of play.


Level 2 Classical Studies

L2CLS

Classical studies is the study of the people, places, and events of the classical world and how they influence the modern world.  At Level 2, Classical Studies is an introduction to the ancient worlds of the Greeks and the Romans. Through the mythology of the gods and goddesses and the archeological evidence which remains, students will experience this course through reading, writing and visual sources from the ancient world. Students will learn about the Greek Hero Achilles and his role in the Trojan War as seen in The Iliad.  They will also investigate the eruption of Mt Vesuvius and discover the hidden truths about Roman life in Pompeii. 

Level 2 Dance

L2DAN

This course builds on the performance, choreographic, and analysis skills learnt in Level 1 Dance.  Students explore a range of dance genres and styles and choreograph dance sequences; for example, ethnic, theatre dance, and choreography for solo or group perormance.

Students will be involved in our senior dance camp and our senior dance showcase in Term 3. 


Level 2 Design

L2ADS

During the Year 12 Design programme students will learn digital skills in programs like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Students create a two-board folio exploring a design project of their choice. Topics of possible exploration include advertising and branding design, product design and character design. Along the way, students will investigate established artists to inform their own creative practice.  

This course will lead into Level 3, Design and/or Photography. 

An adobe license is included in the course fee. Students must install Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator onto their personal devices and need to ensure that their personal device is capable of running these programs. Minimum specs needed are a laptop no older than two years, 16GB of ram and 4GB of video ram. Avoid macs as they are not compatible with out school system, HP are recommended.

Level 2 Digital Technologies

This course continues to develop on the wide range of skills that students covered in Year 11 in the area of Digital Technology. Students build upon their prior learning by designing and creating a drag and drop animation, building on their Python programming skills and an optional database internal. The optional external focuses on Artificial Intelligence and the impacts on society. The range of topics covered in this course give students excellent basic computer skills as well as catering for those students who want to continue on a specialist Digital Technologies career path.

Over the course of the year, students will cultivate their confidence, creativity, and reflective thinking while gaining a comprehensive understanding of theatre. They will refine their performance and presentation skills, applying components of drama to both self-devised and scripted works.

Collaboration will be a central focus, as students learn to work effectively within a group, valuing the diverse perspectives and contributions of their peers. This cooperative approach will not only enhance the quality of their performances but also build essential teamwork skills that are vital in both theatre and beyond.

Students will engage in workshops led by theatre professionals and attend live performances, providing them with valuable real-world insights into the art of theatre. These experiences will not only enhance their practical skills but also prepare them for the year-end written examination, where they will critically analyze and reflect on the theatrical productions they have encountered.

Most Level 3 credits can be awarded as Achieved, Merit or Excellence.

At level 2, Geography aims to inspire students to help shape a better future for our environment as they make sense of our complex and changing world. Students will apply a kaitiakitanga approach to the care of our environment as they explore interactions of the natural and cultural environments we live in. Students will visit sites of Geographic significance to undertake research in the field at Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari or Tongariro National Park. The focal areas will be based around the cause and consequences of issues which affect our natural environment- because we live here!  NB: Actual course content will depend on student interest and current events.


Level 2 German

This course aims to extend language skills beyond the basic themes studied in previous years, with a focus on unfamiliar situations and contexts. Topics to do so may include work and the future, relationships, current issues, film and media etc. Students will continue to develop their communication skills, critical thinking, knowledge of grammar and the cultural awareness required in today’s global world.


Level 2 Health

Each student will be offered the opportunity to gain up to 20 credits across both internal and external achievement standards. 

The aim of this course is to develop a deeper understanding of wellbeing and its influencing factors and builds on work covered in Level 1 Health. There is a strong emphasis on learning through research and investigation of various health topics. 

Students will explore a range of topics which aim to enhance an aspect of wellbeing through the use of a Health Promotion model, they will analyse and evaluate an adolescent health issue and interpersonal issues for teenagers and also investigate issues related to sexuality and gender. The focus for Level 2 Health is on understanding these topics and then exploring a range of strategies to enhance wellbeing at the personal level, community and society levels for all involved.

Level 2 Painting

In this course students will further develop their skills in drawing, painting and mixed media. Students will choose a theme or subject matter of their choice to explore throughout the year. The achievement standards offered in Terms 1 & 2 will provide students with a sound skill base in painting and painting conventions such as; application of paint, using line, tone, colour and compositional conventions. In Term 3 students will continue to develop their ideas by working on a two panel portfolio for external submission. Level 1 Art is recommended for entry to this course.

It's all about setting you up to succeed in the workplace by learning the employability skills that all employers look for. You’ll also explore career options that match your interests, talents, and goals. We also get set for life by covering topics such as pathway planning; job search skills; CV preparation; tax; KiwiSaver; diversity, managing stress etc. 

This course uses Unit Standards and does not involve external work placements. STAR-funded short courses are also offered to broaden your skills and experiences.

Level 2 Photography

This course is for students eager to explore the art of capturing moments through the lens. This course delves into advanced photographic techniques, digital imaging, and creative composition. Students will have the opportunity to develop their technical skills while expressing their unique perspectives through various photographic projects. This course prepares students for further study in visual arts and creative industries. Access to a personal DSLR camera is recommended but not required. 

Level 2 Physical Education

The aim of this course is to deepen student understanding across a range of topics, with a strong emphasis on learning through participation in a variety of physical activities and participation in theoretical lessons. Topics that students will learn about include: social responsibility, risk management, exercise physiology, principles and methods of training, practical performance and analysing the impact of sporting events.

Throughout the year students will engage in a range of localised trips and activities including Rock Climbing, Mountain Biking, Tough Guy Tough Girl challenge, fitness experiences at local gyms and Turbo Touch.

Level 2 Tourism introduces students to the Travel and Tourism industry. Students study the business and history of tourism, work roles, and world tourist destinations.

The Gateway programme enables Year 12 and 13 students to access workplace learning, integrated with school-based learning around work-ready skills. Students work closely with the Gateway coordinator to gain an understanding of the workforce by completing a placement in their area of interest and developing an understanding of their values, qualities and skills. 

Gateway has 2 main parts:

1. A work placement based on the individual student's interests and possible career pathway.

2. Classes at school looking at work-ready skills, including learning about career pathway planning (e.g. CV writing and interview skills), communication and interpersonal skills, employment rights etc.

Students will also complete a First Aid course and Health and Safety course with an outside provider to gain the relevant certificate.

Level 1 Spanish

This course aims to broaden students’ knowledge of the language. In doing so they will gain communication skills, critical thinking, knowledge of grammar and the cultural awareness required in today’s global world.

The course covers accounting for Partnerships, Companies and Manufacturing organisations. Students will develop their understanding of the conceptual basis of accounting, process transactions, analyse financial and non-financial information and explain information for management decision making. This is more than spreadsheets; it’s about real-world thinking and future-focused skills. This course will benefit students in any career they choose and provides a foundation for the study of Accounting at University and other tertiary institutions.

Independent learning is encouraged and a primary aim is to stimulate a continuing interest in biology.


Level 3 Business Studies

Students will explore the internal factors that influence New Zealand businesses that operate globally. This course is an extension of the business concepts studied in Year 12, where students will carry out an innovative business activity with a focus on sustainability. They will work within the Young Enterprise Scheme and have the opportunity to participate and attend the regional and national business competitions.

This course provides an excellent foundation for those wishing to study Business at a tertiary level.

Level 3 Calculus

The course will look at calculus methods including differentiation and integration. Students will have an opportunity to select Complex numbers as an optional external if they wish to. This is a Unit Standard course.

Catering and Hospitality offers a unique opportunity for students to develop their knowledge and extend their skills within hospitality and catering in a vocational context. It is a suitable qualification for those who want an industry recognised background in this area and for those who wish to progress to further education or to work in the industry. It is expected that students will be involved in competition work. It is anticipated that a further Unit Standard will be completed at WINTEC worth 4 credits.

Level 3 Chemistry

This course is designed to give students knowledge and understanding of the learning and development of pre-school aged children. Students will study a range of Level 3 Plunket unit standards and develop more in-depth skills, knowledge and experiences to care for and educate young children. There will be the opportunity to spend time with Jubilee Catholic Early Childcare Centre either here at school or at the centre, to complete the practical components needed for some assessments. This course is a good base for future tertiary study and employment, particularly for those interested in Early Childhood or Primary Teaching, Health Care, Social and Community Services, Babysitting and Nannying. Some of the areas of study include: children’s development and learning, nutrition, health and safety, holistic wellbeing, and creating resources for play.

Level 3 Classical Studies

Classical studies is the study of the people, places, and events of the classical world and how they influence the modern world.  To understand ourselves, and our place in a bicultural society, we need to know about the societies that have laid the foundations for the world in which we live. At Level 3, we focus on Ancient Rome and examine aspects of History (Augustus & The Roman Empire), literature (The Aeneid and the epic journey of Aeneas, Founder of the Roman Empire) and Art (Roman Art and Architecture). 

Level 3 Dance

In this course students will continue to develop their skills from Level 2 Dance, at a more advanced level. Students explore a wide range of dance genres and styles and develop choreography to produce dance works with available production technologies and analyse dance. 

Students will be in an immersive dance camp. Students will also perform in our senior dance showcase in Term 3.


Level 3 Design

Students need to have passed Level 1 and 2 Design, Photography or Painting. Students who have not done any Digital Art subjects will need to have basic computer skills and digital literacy. Priority will be given to students who have taken Art subjects. Experience in Design will give students the opportunity to make a more informed choice about the Visual Art disciplines to complete their external portfolio. An Adobe license will be included in the course fee. Students are encouraged to install Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator onto their personal devices.

Students will focus on visual literacy and creative thinking through an area of design of their choosing. Students will choose between a Spatial design or Product design for their main project. Students are required to be thorough in their process, extensively exploring possibilities, analysing and using research, as well as challenging their abilities to visually communicate their design ideas. Extensive consideration of people, place and purpose are at the forefront of all that is completed in this course. 

This is a UE approved subject.

An optional Waikato University Unistart Computer Science paper is also offered to those student who meet the requirements for entrance into this programme.


Level 3 Drama

Students will explore various styles of theatre, enhancing their versatility and performance capabilities. In their final year, they will have the opportunity to work independently, while also having the option to engage in group performances, production or directing if preferred.

Throughout the course, students will develop valuable real-world skills such as effective communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and creative thinking. These skills are essential for success in many fields beyond theatre, including business, law, education, and the arts. Additionally, students may choose to prepare for the Scholarship Drama Exam, which will be offered as a co-curricular activity during Terms 3 and 4.

The aim of this course is to deepen students understanding of broader societal Health issues and the underlying concepts that underpin the PE and Health curriculum. They will learn through discussion, participation, research and investigation. Students will need to make extensive use of established and evidence based bodies of knowledge when researching each unit of work.

Level 3 Health requires students to think critically about their environment, societal issues and the influences on the wellbeing of communities and populations. Throughout the year students will be encouraged to consider different perspectives and may often debate differing sides of issues. 

Topics that are covered across Level 3 Health are health issues within NZ, health practices currently used within NZ, ethical issues and dilemmas around recognised health issues and analysing an international health issue.

This advanced course is tailored for students who have successfully completed visual art subjects at Level 1 and/or 2 and are ready to deepen their understanding of the photographic medium. You will explore sophisticated techniques, conceptual development, and advanced digital editing, culminating in the creation of a personal portfolio. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking, personal expression, and refining your artistic voice. Level 3 Physical Education

Each student will be offered the opportunity to gain up to 15 credits in a combination of practical and theory based achievement standards and students can work towards gaining UE accreditation.

The aim of this course is to develop students' abilities to analyse and critically evaluate a range of topics within Physical Education. This is achieved through a combination of theory and practical lessons. Topics that students will learn about include: risk and safety management, lifelong participation in physical activity, practical performance and anaylse issues in sport in relation to society. 

Throughout the year students will have the opportunity to participate in a range of localised trips and activities which include whitewater rafting, leap, golf driving rage, laser tag, Tough Guy Tough Girl challenge and Pickleball.

The Level 3 course expands on the principles and ideas that are introduced in Level 2 Physics with a more in depth analysis of Mechanics, Wave behaviour, and Electricity and Electromagnetism. 

Level 3 Psychology

Level 3 Psychology is a literacy rich subject that builds on the ideas from Level 2 Psychology. It delves further into the approaches of Psychology and how the theories interact with understanding human behaviour. 

Level 3 Religious Education

The focus of Level 3 Religious Education is ‘On The Threshold’ and gives students the opportunity to build on their Level 1 and 2 knowledge. In this course students have the opportunity to explore topics such as Scripture, Ethics, the comparison of other worldviews and the beliefs and those of the Catholic Church. Students will participate in three internal Achievement Standards worth 6 credits each. 

Religious Education is a University Approved subject. Reading credits can be gained from this course.


Level 3 Spanish

This course aims to extend language and communication skills developed in previous years with a focus on issues that affect society. Students will also learn to justify and express their own opinions, and challenge those of others in both spoken and written Spanish. Topics may include the environment, immigration, technology, advertising, health and wellbeing, film and media. Students will continue to develop their communication skills, critical thinking, knowledge of grammar, and the cultural awareness required in today’s connected and global world.

Level 3 Statistics

Students studying this course will be analysing time series and using statistical methods to make formal inference.  It will also look at probability concepts and probability distribution including normal distribution in detail. This is best suited for students interested in medicine, social sciences, business and data analysis.

 


Level 3 Te Ao Māori

By the end of NCEA Level 3, students can take part in general conversation with speakers of Te Reo Māori, have a very good understanding of what is said and contribute relevant comments. They can explain and discuss many of their own ideas and opinions and can use Te Reo Māori creatively. They can read a variety of authentic Te Reo Māori materials and write expressively for a range of purposes. Students can use a range of strategies to help them learn Te Reo Māori effectively and they can demonstrate a very good level of fluency for a learner of Te Reo Māori as a second language.

Level 1-3 offers students the opportunity to strengthen their language skills, cultural knowledge, and identity. Through learning and using te reo, students develop communication skills in both spoken and written forms, gain a deeper understanding of tikanga Maaori, and build confidence in engaging with Maaori contexts.

Level 3 Tourism

This course prepares students for a future in the Tourism industry. Possible careers in the Tourism industry include travel agent, flight attendant, cruise ship staff, tour guide and adventure guide, to name a few. Studying Tourism also supports careers in hospitality, public relations, retail and recreation. Students study unit standards through New Zealand School of Tourism. These focus on destination specific tourist attractions in New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific and also Maaori tourism. Tourism is a good supporting subject for students of Geography, Economics and PE.

These papers do not provide NCEA credits and this course is the equivalent of a study line in which students complete their papers.

Level 1 Spanish

Each student will be offered the opportunity to gain up to 15 credits in Level 1 Spanish. They will choose between one of the two internals.

This course aims to broaden students’ knowledge of the language. Topics around familiar contexts such as self-descriptions, family, home, school, freetime and travel and holidays form the basis for students to understand and produce simple to more complex Spanish in written and spoken forms. In doing so they will gain communication skills, critical thinking, knowledge of grammar and the cultural awareness required in today’s global world.


Level 2 Spanish

This course aims to extend language skills acquired at Levels 1-6, enabling students to cope in less familiar situations and contexts. Students will also learn to justify and express their own ideas and opinions, and support and challenge those of others in both spoken and written Spanish. Topics may include work and the future, technology, current affairs, film and media, historical events, study of Spanish-speaking countries, etc. Students will continue to develop their communication skills, critical thinking, knowledge of grammar, and the cultural awareness required in today’s connected world.
