Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within 6 months of the Education Review Office and Onepoto School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Onepoto School is in Northcote, Auckland and provides education for ākonga in Years 1 to 6. The school has recently been rebuilt. The school roll of mostly Māori and Pacific students is growing.

Onepoto School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

  • strengthen school partnerships with whānau to improve outcomes for ākonga
  • consistently monitor progress and evaluate performance to inform future decisions
  • enhance the health and wellbeing of students through culturally responsive practice.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Onepoto School’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how effectively the school is accelerating learner progress and achievement for all ākonga

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is to:

  • raise the achievement of ākonga through evidence-based practices and high quality teaching of literacy and mathematics
  • use student achievement data to deliberately inform classroom planning and teaching and learning
  • build student agency to enable ākonga to become life-long learners

The school expects to see:

  • ākonga attending school regularly and actively engaged in their learning
  • ākonga knowing and sharing their learning progress and achievement with their whānau
  • effective use of achievement information and evaluation that informs high quality teaching and learning and positively impacts on learner success.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to evaluate how effectively it is accelerating the achievement of all ākonga

  • the board continues to scrutinise its own and the school’s performance to inform planning, resourcing and meeting its statutory responsibilities
  • leaders and staff who are refining and strengthening school conditions, actions and practices that promote learner wellbeing
  • good quality teaching and learning that enhances learners self-esteem, engagement and participation.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • all ākonga attending school regularly in order to lift student achievement
  • strengthening student agency so they are able to talk about learning, progress and achievement
  • strengthening learning partnerships with whānau, parents and community
  • a cycle of evaluation that continues to monitor teaching practice and student learning.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
