Background

Context

Papatoetoe Central School is a culturally diverse school catering for students in Years 1 to 6, in Papatoetoe, South Auckland. Opened in 1857, the school has a long, proud history and association with their local community. The school vision is to create empowered learners contributing to our communities. 

Papatoetoe Central School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

  • curriculum Development; strengthen a curriculum that is relevant to the needs, interests and history of our community 
  • cultural Responsiveness; celebrate te ao Māori and enhance students’ sense of identity, language, and culture while celebrating our communities’ diversity
  • learning Support; ensure success for all students through supportive and inclusive opportunities
  • wellbeing; promote and build resilience and wellbeing in our school whānau.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how well the school leadership structure is shifting teacher practice to improve equitable and excellent outcomes for all learners.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:

  • empowering all leaders to impact change through genuine inquiry into practice
  • lifting leaders’ and teachers’ data literacy and ensure data is used effectively to inform teaching practice
  • ensuring the new leadership structure is effective and leading to improved outcomes for learners. 

The school expects to see:

  • leaders and teachers using effective formative practice to improve learning outcomes for all learners
  • school wide shifts in literacy and numeracy achievement and greater equity for priority learners
  • accelerated progress for learners working towards curriculum expectations.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise: 

  • continuing to use data effectively to ensure equity and excellence are achieved for all learners
  • further developing middle leaders while developing coaching capabilities to ensure excellent and equitable opportunities for all learners.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community.
