Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within 23 months of the Education Review Office and Mangapikopiko School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Mangapikopiko School was formerly known as Park Estate School. In July 2022 the school was relocated to a new site and was gifted the name Mangapikopiko by Ngāti Tamaoho.

Mangapikopiko School is an increasingly diverse contributing school catering for children in years 1 to 6 in Papakura, Auckland.

Mangapikopiko School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

  • inspiring learners and encouraging creativity

  • collaborating with ākonga, whānau and community to make learning meaningful

  • learning about our place, people and history.

These priorities are reflected in their school strategic goals of being creative, being connected and being collaborative.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Mangapikopiko School’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how well the school is connecting and building learning partnerships with the school community.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is to:

  • create a strong sense of belonging for all children and whānau

  • collaboratively build a community space that values the Treaty of Waitangi, our place, people and history

  • recognise whanau expertise and knowledge of their children

  • work in partnership to improve learning outcomes for all children.

The school expects to see:

  • whānau actively contributing to learning

  • teachers providing increased opportunities for creating and sharing, allowing whānau to connect and contribute to their child’s learning

  • enhanced learning focussed relationships with whānau so that they become active partners in their child’s learning, knowing their goals, strengths and successes.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support the school in its goal to connect and build learning partnerships with the school community.

  • leadership that reflects ongoing commitment to achieving the school’s strategic direction

  • leadership with a clear focus on equity and inclusion

  • well-resourced learning environments that support collaborative curriculum delivery and children’s engagement with learning

  • community connections and a commitment to a reciprocal relationship with Ngāti Tamaoho.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • continuing to make learning visible, so that whānau are well informed and knowledgeable about school learning.

  • ensuring all students are experiencing a balanced rich curriculum with consistent teaching practice across the school

  • teaching practices that effectively responds and connect to children’s language, culture and identity.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
