Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within nine months of the Education Review Office and Pukekohe Hill working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Pukekohe Hill School is located in Pukekohe, providing education for students in Years 1 to 6.  The school has an ongoing commitment to integrating te reo and te ao Māori into everyday learning.

Pukekohe Hill’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are to ‘grow great people together, who are’:

  • confident – embedding a school-wide shared language of learning
  • connected – knowing who we are and our place in the community
  • capable – raising achievement in literacy
  • creative – promoting creativity and engagement.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on the Pukekohe Hill School website.

ERO and the school are working together to improve equitable outcomes and increase progress and achievement in literacy. Further strengthening collective capability in evaluation to inform direction and support success for all ākonga will be an ongoing focus for the school.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:

  • to continue to respond to learners’ needs, enabling equitable outcomes for identified groups of students
  • the opportunity it provides to strengthen programmes and practices to improve rates of progress in literacy
  • the school’s commitment to enhancing students’ engagement and ownership in their learning pathways.

The school expects to see increased rates of progress in literacy and improved equitable outcomes for all learners.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal of raising achievement and enabling equity:

  • An inclusive learning culture that fosters a strong sense of belonging and engagement.
  • Collaborative leadership that strengthens consistency and sustainability of practices and continuous school improvement.
  • A culture of professional learning that builds teacher knowledge and capability.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • implementing targeted actions and programmes to increase progress and achievement in reading and writing to enable equitable outcomes
  • embedding students’ ownership and understanding of their learning pathways to increase progress and engagement.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
