Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within six months of the Education Review Office and Redoubt North School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Redoubt North School is in Manukau, South Auckland and provides education for ākonga in Years 0 to 8. The school’s mission statement is: ‘We aspire to provide a caring and positive learning environment, empowering ākonga to become active lifelong learners who are confident and able to communicate and progress in an ever-changing world’.

Redoubt North School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for ākonga are:

  • increasing teacher capability with quality teaching and learning programmes

  • teachers to reflect and implement changes: on their own practice and pedagogy; identifying individual strengths and needs of ākonga

  • professional learning pathways creating consistency of curriculum delivery.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Redoubt North School’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how well school-wide curriculum delivery and teaching practice enhance achievement for all ākonga.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is to:

  • continue to accelerate the progress and achievement of all ākonga

  • sustain effective teaching practice and strategies across the school

  • use appropriate assessment and moderation consistently to inform teaching and learning.

The school expects to see:

  • ākonga engaged in challenging learning experiences and opportunities that continue to enhance their progress and achievement

  • teachers applying their professional learning to support consistent curriculum delivery across the school

  • quality assessment and moderation inform teachers’ reflective practice and enable excellent outcomes for all ākonga.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to enhance the achievement of all ākonga through curriculum delivery and teaching practice:

  • ākonga experience a safe and inclusive learning environment that is underpinned by the school’s values of respect, caring, kindness and humility

  • ākonga demonstrate a strong sense of belonging and identity, valuing and accepting individual differences

  • strong, experienced school leadership and governance that has well-established and trusted relationships with parents, whānau and the wider school community.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • continuing to strengthen teaching knowledge and practice to accelerate the progress and achievement of all ākonga

  • providing professional learning opportunities that build consistency in teaching, learning and assessment.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
