Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within 12 months of the Education Review Office and Remuera School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Remuera School, located in Remuera, Auckland, provides education for students in Years 1 to 6. The school has an experienced principal and leadership team, and a caring and inclusive school culture. This includes a variety of sensory spaces, and specialist teachers in the arts and languages.

Remuera School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

  • to enable all students to access the curriculum and ensure curriculum delivery is of the highest standard, with a particular emphasis on Literacy & Numeracy

  • to provide relevant and authentic learning through compelling local and global experiences that afford students opportunities to develop into rich human beings

  • to provide students with access to 21st Century technological resources, and access to programmes and devices that support and enrich their learning.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Remuera Primary School’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how the impact of school initiatives are contributing to the academic success of all learners. The school is implementing a Structured Literacy approach. It is evaluating the outcomes of flexible grouping and continuing to build teacher capability to meet the individual needs of all learners, including those with learning support needs.

The rationale for selecting these evaluation foci are:

  • the impact initiatives have on teachers’ personal pedagogy and the progress and achievement of learners

  • enhancing teachers’ pedagogy, and outcomes for all learners through data driven evidence

  • strengthening teachers’ responsiveness to needs of all learners.

The school expects to see changes in its approaches to curriculum provision, the responsiveness of teachers to the diverse needs of learners, and improved progress and achievement outcomes for all learners.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal of evaluating how the impact of the school initiatives are contributing to the academic success of all learners.

  • high levels of professional leadership and effective teaching focussed on the learning and wellbeing of each learner

  • learners who demonstrate agency and self-efficacy in their learning to achieve equity and excellence in their progress and achievement

  • sustained, systematic and targeted support for learners with diverse learning requirements

  • a learning culture characterised by respect, inclusion, empathy, collaboration and co-regulation.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • continuing to implement relational pedagogy through a holistic approach to students’ self-regulation, academic competence, and physical and emotional wellbeing

  • ongoing professional development, collaboration and moderation to strengthen learner outcomes for our under-served learners, including our Maori and Pacific learners.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
