Background

For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz
Context
Shelly Park School is in Howick, East Auckland and provides education for students in Years 1 to 6. The Board appointed a new principal in Term 4 2020.
The school’s motto is ‘Working Together to Succeed’. This motto is underpinned by the Shelly Park School kaupapa which has been developed in collaboration with staff, students, and the community. The kaupapa encompasses the school values of ‘Respect, Responsibility and Determination’ and is grounded in the anchor stones of: Love of Learning, Inclusion, Relationships, Wellbeing, Agency, and the school capabilities of: Citizenship, Creative and Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Communication, Character.
Shelly Park School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are to:
- implement the school values, anchor stones and capabilities through all that the school does
- develop structured literacy in the junior area through professional learning
- enhance the school’s sense of identity, language and culture and embed the Aotearoa New Zealand’s histories curriculum.
You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Shelly Park School’s website.
ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how well the school’s assessment for learning practices strengthen aspects of the Shelly Park School kaupapa to ensure all students progress and achieve.
The rationale for selecting this evaluation is to:
- strengthen student involvement in the learning process to raise their achievement across the curriculum
- build continuity of assessment for learning practices among all staff.
The school expects to see:
- students involved in decisions around their learning
- classroom programmes and teaching practice consistently supporting and encouraging students to know what they are learning and why
- students able to articulate their achievement, progress, and next steps to ensure they experience success as learners.
Strengths
The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal of using assessment for learning practices and aspects of the Shelly Park School kaupapa to increase student progress and achievement:
- students are confident in their learning and express a strong sense of belonging and connection to the school
- students experience an inclusive and supportive learning environment that enables them to demonstrate persistence and resilience in a range of learning opportunities
- school leadership collaboratively sustains a positive culture of relational trust and support among staff.
Where to next?
Moving forward, the school will prioritise:
- embedding aspects of the Shelly Park School kaupapa to strengthen student involvement in the learning process
- continuing to provide professional learning opportunities that promote effective implementation of assessment for learning practices and strengthen consistency across classroom programmes
- using evaluation and collaborative inquiry to enhance teaching practice and ensure positive learner outcomes.
ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
