LatestTe Ara Huarau | School Profile Report
Background
This Profile Report was written within six months of the Education Review Office and Peninsula Primary School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz
Context
Peninsula Primary School is a Year 1 to 6 primary school in Te Atatu, West Auckland. The school community continues to reflect the dynamic growth in the area.
The school motto “Learn, Grow, Shine” is enacted through the vision to show respect to self, others and the environment (whakaute); show responsibility for self, others and actions (ngā haepapa) and show resilience in times of challenge, risk and continued growth (manawaroa).
The school is a member of the Te Atatu Community of Learning - Te Hapori o ngā Kura o Te Atatū.
Peninsula Primary School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are to:
-
review teaching and learning strategies to meet the diverse needs of all learners
-
review and refine the local school curriculum framework which defines a shared understanding of learning areas and reflects the values of the school community
-
embed a school culture of hauora by ensuring students develop an understanding of what it is, why it is important, and how to achieve and maintain balance.
You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Peninsula Primary School’s website.
ERO and the school are working together to evaluate the impact of professional learning and development on the wellbeing, engagement and achievement of all learners.
The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:
-
leaders and teachers are engaged with Assessment for Learning professional learning and development which will support the development of the Peninsula Primary School local curriculum
-
teachers continue to identify and use relevant teaching strategies to meet the learning needs of children in an environment that supports student wellbeing.
The school expects to see a responsive local curriculum that meets the diverse needs of learners so that all learners are engaged in their learning and supported to achieve equitable and excellent outcomes.
Strengths
The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to evaluate the impact of professional learning and development on the wellbeing, engagement and achievement of all learners:
-
a commitment to the development of a responsive Peninsula Primary School local curriculum
-
learner hauora/wellbeing is well promoted, and teachers and leaders are proactive in responding to learners' needs and engaging external support when required
-
leaders are committed to using data to analyse progress against goals and promote evaluative practice through professional learning groups.
Where to next?
Moving forward, the school will prioritise:
-
engaging in teacher inquiry and professional development to strengthen teacher knowledge and practice to meet the diverse needs of all learners
-
establishing a common language, understanding and use of assessment information
-
continuing to engage the school community in the development of the Peninsula Primary School curriculum to reflect shared aspirations, and cultural identities.
ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
