LatestTe Ara Huarau | School Profile Report
Background
This Profile Report was written within 18 months of the Education Review Office and Aberdeen School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz
Context
Aberdeen School is located in the north central suburb of Aberdeen in Hamilton and within the boundaries of Ngāti Māhanga, the local iwi. It caters for students in Years 1 to 6. An established senior leadership team continue in their roles.
Aberdeen School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:
- to grow our teachers as learners
- to grow our students as learners
- to promote te reo and tikanga Māori across the school.
You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Aberdeen School’s website.
ERO and the school are working together to evaluate the extent to which newly acquired pedagogies from current professional development are documented, embedded, and transferred to everyday practice in all learning areas.
The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:
- to ensure that effective pedagogy learnt in one learning area informs and improves teacher practice in other learning areas
- to ensure that effective pedagogy learnt through current researched best practice is sustained and embedded.
The school expects to see a continued rise in student progress and achievement, particularly those who are at risk of under-achieving, as teachers consistently implement research-based teaching approaches across all learning areas.
Strengths
The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to evaluate the extent to which newly acquired pedagogies from current professional development are influencing everyday teaching practice:
- leaders who respond effectively and strategically to the trends and patterns identified in school-wide data
- a positive and inclusive culture for learning
- a well-managed and well-informed response to students with special needs.
Where to next?
Moving forward, the school will prioritise:
- incorporating the newly acquired best practice into its current systems and documentation about what good teaching looks like at Aberdeen School
- transferring the new learnings into the teaching of all learning areas.
ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
