LatestTe Ara Huarau | School Profile Report
Background
This Profile Report was written within 6 months of the Education Review Office and Glen Massey School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website www.ero.govt.nz
Context
Glen Massey School is located in the small rural village of Glen Massey South West of Ngāruawāhia. The established principal continues in his role.
Glen Massey School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:
- better achievement, particularly in literacy and mathematics
- stronger connections with parents and the wider whānau of the school
- improve the internal and external environment of the school
- enhance the skills of teachers.
You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Glen Massey School’s website.
ERO and the school are working together to evaluate, for improved student outcomes, the extent to which teachers are using a student-centred approach to teaching and learning, and how leaders monitor and report on the progress of at-risk learners.
The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:
- a student-centred approach is based on a foundation of taking students from where they are at and adding value. It promotes a greater focus on responding effectively to each student’s learning needs for progress to meet their potential
- to address levels of disparity for Māori students and boys.
The school expects to see:
- continuing improvement in overall student achievement in literacy and mathematics
- improvement in the number of students at-risk of underachieving making accelerated progress.
Strengths
The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to evaluate the extent to which a student-centred approach to teaching and learning is implemented, and how well leaders monitor and report on the progress of at-risk learners:
- a warm, enthusiastic and positive culture for learning
- effective systems for tracking and monitoring student progress
- a range of different ways that students are empowered to lead their own learning.
Where to next?
Moving forward, the school will prioritise:
- revising board targets to focus on accelerating the progress of all students who are achieving below curriculum expectations
- reviewing teacher planning and strategies to promote a strong focus on responding effectively to identified student learning needs.
ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
