Background
This Profile Report was written within 10 months of the Education Review Office and Glenholme School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website www.ero.govt.nz
Context
Glenholme School is located in the city of Rotorua and provides education for students in Years 1 to 6. The school opened in 1948 and has developed strong links with local iwi, Ngāti Whakaue. The school is proud of its learning dispositions and values. Tamariki are supported and inspired through the five learning dispositions that are connected to tipuna of Ngāti Whakaue iwi. The school prioritises learning that is authentic, purposeful, and visible for all tamariki.
Glenholme School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:
-
all students are able to access the New Zealand Curriculum as evidenced by progress and achievement in relation to learning progressions
-
Māori learners are participating, achieving, and contributing to Te Kura o nga Raupareparenga
-
Pasifika learners are participating, achieving, and contributing to Glenholme School
-
students with additional needs are participating, achieving, and contributing to Glenholme School.
You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Glenholme School’s website.
ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how effectively schoolwide systems, and teaching and learning programmes, support all learners to experience success through a strong sense of cultural identity and belonging.
The rationale for selecting this evaluation is to ensure:
- every learner has maximum and equitable opportunity to learn and achieve at appropriate curriculum levels
- every learner is confident in their sense of identity, culture and belonging
- teaching and learning programmes across the school are coherent, consistent, and responsive to the needs of every learner.
The school expects to see effective teaching and learning programmes that enable all learners maximum opportunity to participate, contribute and achieve their potential, with a strong sense of identity, culture and belonging.
Strengths
The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to ensure all learners participate, contribute, and achieve their potential, with a strong sense of identity, culture and belonging:
-
Collaborative and committed leaders and staff focused on all learners achieving their potential.
-
Established, supportive relationships with whānau, community and Ngāti Whakaue iwi.
-
Internal expertise to support improvement focuses in literacy, mathematics and te reo Māori.
-

-
continued staff professional learning in te reo me tikanga Māori
-
continuing to support and embed effective use of assessment to guide responsive teaching and learning programmes
-
continuing to enhance partnerships with whānau and community to support valued outcomes for all learners.
ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community.
