Background

This Profile Report was written within 12 months of the Education Review Office and Horohoro School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. Context 

Horohoro School is a full primary school situated  south west of Rotorua. Horohoro School is situated in a special position between two local marae, Kearoa and Rongomaipapa. Many students have links to these marae which go back many generations.

Horohoro School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are to:

• improve student engagement, attitude, and achievement in writing

• increase aspects of Māori culture within writing programmes

• strengthen teaching practice and pedagogy in writing.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate student progress and achievement in writing.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is because:

• significant numbers of learners below expected levels for writing

• the need to have Māori boys on parity with other students

• individual learners are needing additional support in writing.

The school expects to see:

• increased teacher expectations of learners for their engagement, attitude, and achievement in writing

• the establishment of a local curriculum that responds to the aspirations of parents and whānau.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to student progress and achievement in writing:

• a supportive team culture where teachers share good practice

• a positive home / school partnership that supports students’ engagement in their learning.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

• implementing a localised curriculum that contributes to learners’ improved outcomes

• increasing aspects of Māori culture within the writing programme

• strengthening teacher practice and pedagogy resulting in increased student achievement in writing.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community.
