Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within 11 months of the Education Review Office and Rangitaiki School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Rangitaiki School is a small rural school located approximately 30km west of Taupō and caters for learners in Years 1 to 8.

Rangitaiki School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are to:

  • develop a locally and culturally responsive school culture

  • ensure whānau are invested in the success of learners

  • keep teachers/staff up to date with ‘best practice’ to meet students’ learning needs.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Rangitaiki School’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate which assessment practices are most effective to improve the accuracy of student data to inform teaching and learning.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is to:

  • streamline assessment systems to provide more focused data to inform teaching

  • provide the board of trustees with clear and accurate student achievement information to inform resourcing decisions

  • enhance the use of assessment information to identify individual learning needs and improve student outcomes.

The school expects to see:

  • assessment information that identifies specific student learning needs

  • teachers responding to individual student information in their planning

  • principal reports to the board share accurate learning progress of students’ progress.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to improve assessment practices:

  • Staff are focused on building their understanding of new ideas in assessment processes.

  • The school is well-resourced and provides a range of curriculum opportunities for students.

  • The Kāhui ako and the principals’ association support school leadership in assessment development.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • reviewing assessment practices to better inform teaching and learning

  • using and analysing student data to inform best practice teaching

  • reviewing procedures to report to the board and whānau.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
