Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within 16 months of the Education Review Office and Kihikihi School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Kihikihi School is situated in the Waipā district of the Waikato. It provides dual medium education for students in Years 1 to 8.

Kihikihi School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are to:

  • provide and continue to develop the physical environment to maximise authentic learning opportunities in every space
  • provide high quality teaching and authentic, localised learning programmes, maximising student potential so that talents are recognised and developed, and academic achievement exceeds curriculum expectations
  • further develop, strengthen and grow the capabilities of staff, leadership and board members
  • have a positive school and community culture where school values permeate throughout all aspects.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Kihikihi School’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how well assessment information is used to guide decision making to meet the needs of all students.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is to:

  • further define and clarify assessment practices to address the needs of all students in both English and te reo Māori pathways
  • develop collective efficacy in the collection, analysis and use of student achievement data, in both the English and te reo Māori medium.

The school expects to see strengthened use of student achievement data contributing to:

  • improved outcomes for all students sustained over time
  • alignment and consistency in practices and pedagogy for assessment.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to evaluate how well assessment information is used to guide decision making to meet the needs of all students:

  • Leaders, whānau and staff are aware of the need for, and are committed to, improving outcomes for all learners across the school.
  • An environment where staff and students experience a positive, caring education that is focused on increasing wellbeing and achievement.
  • Embedded values that are consistent and enacted in daily school life.
  • A commitment to supporting all learners to achieve success with a strong, secure sense of their cultural identity.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • using evaluation to lead and review the marau ā kura to ensure practice meets the aspirations of whānau and future needs of students.
