Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within 12 months of the Education Review Office and Melville Intermediate working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Melville Intermediate is located in Hamilton and caters for students in years 7 and 8. The school provides opportunities for education in English and te reo Māori based on the New Zealand Curriculum.

Melville Intermediate’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are to:

  • raise engagement and achievement for every student through increasing teacher effectiveness and consistency

  • develop a data informed plan for Māori achieving success as Māori

  • include mana whenua in the design and implementation of teaching and learning

  • develop critical, reflective, resilient, and self-motivated learners.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Melville Intermediate’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how effectively leaders and teachers are raising engagement and achievement for all students.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is for trustees, leaders, and teachers to know:

  • the impact of teaching programmes and practices on student motivation to learn and achieve

  • how well the school is supporting Māori students to achieve as Māori.

The school expects to see increased student engagement and achievement in learning through consistent and effective teaching and assessment practices, and through building schoolwide evaluation capability.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to raise student engagement and achievement:

  • collective leadership based on shared values

  • collaborative and responsive planning based on clear strategic goals

  • enduring governance partnership and representation with mana whenua and tangata whenua.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • ongoing upskilling of teachers’ knowledge and use of assessment tools and methods to support consistent practice

  • building teacher capability to analyse and use reliable assessment data to target student learning needs

  • leadership supporting teachers to build evaluation capability to understand the impact of teaching on student learning

  • the development of a local curriculum that reflects the culture and identity of students at Melville Intermediate to improve students’ sense of belonging and strengthen learning relationships.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
