Background

Context
Mihi School is a small rural school located off State Highway 5 between Rotorua and Taupō and provides education for students in Years 1 to 6. The school vision, ‘Growing Great People – Te tipu o nga tangata nunui’ prioritises a values-led learning environment which is supported through partnerships with whānau.
Mihi School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are to:
- promote a values-led learning environment that supports all students to achieve to their potential
- build strong partnerships that support student, teacher and whānau wellbeing.
You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Mihi School’s Facebook.
ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how effectively the localised curriculum and school values support all learners to achieve their potential.
The rationale for selecting this evaluation is to:
- ensure all learners have maximum opportunity to learn, succeed and achieve at or above their expected curriculum level
- ensure every learner has a strong sense of identity, culture and belonging
- achieve and maintain high rates of school attendance for all learners
- strengthen community and whānau partnerships to support learner wellbeing and positive outcomes.
The school expects to see improved outcomes of equity and excellence for all learners through the implementation of a rich local curriculum that is supported by school values.
Strengths
The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goals:
- collaborative and committed staff who are focused on improving outcomes for all learners
- positive relationships with whānau
- detailed plans for improvement that prioritise learner needs
- embedded school values that support learner wellbeing.
Where to next?
Moving forward, the school will prioritise outcomes of equity and excellence for all learners through:
- monitoring and responding to school attendance rates for all learners
- continuing to prioritise school values to support wellbeing for all
- continuing to strengthen partnerships with whānau and community to support the development and implementation of the localised curriculum, and valued outcomes for all learners.
