Background

This Profile Report was written within 6 months of the Education Review Office and Rhode Street School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Rhode Street School is situated southwestern Hamilton suburb of Dinsdale, providing education for ākonga year 0 – 8. The school promotes the values of Manaakitnaga, we care and show respect, Awhi, we embrace diversity, we are resilient, Ngā Manukura Ako, we learn from each other. An acting Principal is in place for 2024.

Rhode Street School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are to:

  • provide opportunities for all ākonga to thrive and reach their potential
  • ensure the kura is a happy and safe place to work and learn
  • build collective strength by growing knowledge and skills to improve teaching and learning.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Rhode Street School’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate to what extent leadership is strategically fostering a safe, nurturing and positive learning climate to improve student wellbeing and outcomes.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is to:

  • support the implementation of positive behaviour for learning throughout the school
  • strengthen the consistency of practice across the school
  • be responsive to school wide behaviour data to improve teaching practice and outcomes for learners.

The school expects to see:

  • consistency of teaching practice, including appropriate school wide systems and processes in place
  • increased positive learning behaviours across the school
  • improved engagement, accelerated progress and equitable outcomes for all.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support the school in its goal to improve student outcomes.

  • Whānau based relationships between teachers, support staff and students that supports connection to the learning programmes.
  • Well-established partnerships with outside agencies support individual student’s learning and behaviour needs.
  • Teaching team that collaborates and supports each other to improve practice.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • identifying what is working well for learning behaviours and what needs to be improved
  • developing a coherent schoolwide action plan to monitor progress of improvements in learning behaviours
  • providing targeted professional learning and development for leaders, teachers and support staff to increase skills, knowledge and practices to build a shared understanding of effective positive behaviour for learning.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
