Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within six months of the Education Review Office and Roto-o-Rangi School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Roto-o-Rangi School is located in a rural community in the outskirts of Cambridge. It provides education for students in Years 1 to 6. The school has strong links to its local community and mana whenua and is an active member of Te Oko Horoi Kāhui Ako.

Roto-o-Rangi School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

  • to grow inclusive relationships

  • to build future focused learners

  • to grow collaboration to be stronger learners.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Roto-o-Rangi School’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how effectively the school’s curriculum is enabling equitable outcomes for all, and challenging learners to excel and achieve excellence. Strengthening learner wellbeing and engagement and empowering students in their learning progressions are ongoing priorities for the school.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:

  • the opportunity it provides to respond effectively to school data to address the learning needs of identified groups of students

  • the school’s commitment to the wellbeing of all students and strengthening positive relationships

  • the school’s strategic focus on promoting learner agency through an inclusive and responsive curriculum.

The school expects to see further actions implemented to strengthen inclusive relationships, student resilience, equitable outcomes, and academic success for all.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to enhance equitable and excellent outcomes for all leaners:

  • leadership of learning that collaboratively develops and pursues the school’s vision, goals and targets for equity and excellence

  • teaching and learning programmes that promote high levels of student achievement

  • positive relationships with parents, whānau and mana whenua that support quality partnerships for learning and Māori student success.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • continuing to implement the Positive Behaviour for Learning programme (PB4L) to support student wellbeing, healthy relationships and sustain an inclusive culture for learning

  • developing consistency in assessment for learning practices to strengthen students’ knowledge of their own learning and next steps

  • continuing to strengthen teacher capability to further implement engaging learning opportunities that enable students to excel in their learning.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
