Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within 12 months of the Education Review Office and Selwyn School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Selwyn School is located in Rotorua and provides education for students in Years 1-6. The school prioritises relationships and hauora and is proud of their partnerships with whānau, community and iwi. The school’s vision, ‘Kia kotahi tātou Takohanga, Whakanuia, kia u ki te Ako – Together we are Responsible, Respectful and Right into Learning’ empowers high aspirations for the learning and hauora of all learners. The school is proud to have three Rumaki classes. The six cultural competencies, gifted to Te Maru o Ngongataha Kahui Ako, weave a kaupapa of ako across Māori and English medium.

Selwyn School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are to:

  • ensure all students in both English and Māori medium and progress as expected in core curriculum areas

  • embed the refreshed localised curriculum and further strengthen teaching and learning pedagogy and practice to enhance student learning and wellbeing

  • further strengthen leadership capability and capacity to enhance student learning and wellbeing.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Selwyn School’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how well the localised curriculum and culturally responsive practices support effective teaching and learning programmes to impact outcomes of equity and excellence for all learners.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is to:

  • ensure all learners have maximum opportunity to learn, succeed and achieve at or above their expected curriculum level

  • continue to strengthen effective and consistent teaching, learning and assessment practice across the school, to ensure these practices are responsive to the needs of all learners

  • improve and maintain high rates of attendance for all learners.

The school expects to see effective school-wide consistency in responsive, localised and culturally connected teaching and learning programmes, resulting in improved outcomes of equity and excellence for all learners.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goals:

  • highly valued school culture of whanaungatanga (care and connectedness) that supports learners' sense of identity, culture and belonging

  • collaborative and committed staff focused on improving outcomes for all learners

  • established systems and processes to support internal evaluation and collective improvement

  • internal and external expertise to facilitate and support priority improvements in culturally responsive and relational pedagogy and practice.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise outcomes of equity and excellence for all learners through:

  • staff professional learning to enhance effective pedagogy and practice and the use of valid information to respond to learner needs

  • continuing to prioritise and embed the refreshed localised curriculum

  • continuing to prioritise student wellbeing through a culture of whanaungatanga and relationships with whānau and community to support learner outcomes

  • continuing to strengthen te reo and tikanga Māori within the school culture, curriculum and practices.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
