Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within 5 months of the Education Review Office and Taupiri School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Taupiri School, situated at the base of Taupiri Maunga, is a full primary school, catering for children in Years 1 to 8. The school vision is to work alongside whaanau, the community and mana whenua to build responsible and resilient young people, who can establish and maintain positive relationships and create a better future for all.

Taupiri School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

  • all students will be exposed to a wide local curriculum that reflects the desires and needs of the community

  • to develop reciprocal learning relationships between school, child and whaanau

  • to develop and deepen connections with the local marae

  • to develop a greater link to the community, school and wider.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Taupiri School’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate Taupiri School’s local curriculum review, redesign and implementation to ensure equitable outcomes for all learners.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:

  • to review the school’s curriculum alongside the national curriculum refresh

  • to strengthen partnerships with whaanau, community and mana whenua post covid

  • to increase collective capacity to conduct and use internal evaluation processes.

The school expects to see a strong local curriculum that reflects the needs and aspirations of the school community and mana whenua, using internal evaluation to achieve equity and excellence.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to evaluate its local curriculum review, redesign, and implementation:

  • Leadership collaboratively sustains a culture of relational trust, contributing to organisational capacity building for continuous improvement.

  • A school learning climate that is consistently positive and culturally responsive, which promotes student engagement.

  • A professional development action plan that is in place to support the embedding of local curriculum, which aligns with the strategic direction of the school.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • redesigning the local curriculum to promote strong and consistent implementation across all learning spaces

  • the voice of students, whaanau, community and mana whenua to inform strategic planning and local curriculum redesign

  • using internal evaluation processes to achieve equitable outcomes for all learners.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
