Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within 17 months of the Education Review Office and Te Poi School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Te Poi School is located near Matamata and provides education for students in Years 1 to 6.  The school’s vision is: ‘together we are thinkers, learners and citizens. Me mahi tahi tatou mō te oranga o te katoa. We should work together for the wellbeing of everyone.’

Te Poi School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

  • providing effective educational opportunities and success for learners
  • ensuring safe and inclusive learning environments
  • implementing te Tiriti practices in response to learner’s needs.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Te Poi School’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how well student agency is bringing about improvements in student engagement and achievement, in particular writing.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is the need to:

  • increase student progress and achievement in writing, especially Māori and boys
  • improve student engagement and success in learning through strengthening student agency and student voice.

The school expects to see:

  • improved student writing achievement and accelerated progress for those that need this
  • students able to articulate what they need to do to improve and know when they have achieved their goals
  • schoolwide consistency in teaching strategies that support students to know and understand their learning.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to strengthen student agency and improve student achievement in writing.

  • Strong leadership and teaching staff that collaborate well to prioritise schoolwide improvement.
  • Teachers’ expertise and commitment to professional development improves learning opportunities and experiences for students.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • raising and sustaining student achievement in writing
  • ensuring a shared understanding of effective teaching strategies for students taking responsibility for their own learning.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
