Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within nine months of the Education Review Office and Moturoa School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Moturoa School is an urban school located in Moturoa, Ngāmotu (New Plymouth). It caters for learners from Years 1 to 6. The school kaupapa for learning is manaakitanga, whanaungatanga, ako and mahi tahi.

The school offer a Montessori special programme.

Moturoa School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

  • to build an inclusive learning environment
  • to build capacity in assessment for learning
  • to grow learning focused partnerships with the whānau, hapū, iwi, parents and the community
  • to utilise a strengths-based approach underpinned by the Moturoa kaupapa.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Moturoa School’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how effectively manaakitanga practices are engaging and enabling learners to achieve equitable and excellent outcomes in mathematics.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:

  • manaakitanga is the connection between enabling, enriching and enhancing effective teaching and learning
  • the kaupapa ensures the mana of learners is preserved and enhanced through school systems, structure and actions, for improved outcomes for all learners
  • achievement outcomes in mathematics are not yet equitable and excellent.

The school expects to see:

  • the kaupapa of manaakitanga well-embedded into the school culture and the approach shared across other curriculum areas.
  •  relevant structures to positively engage all students in mathematics learning and responsive actions to effectively target the strengths and needs of all learners are established
  • shifts in teaching practice to more effectively target the needs of all learners
  • equitable and excellent outcomes in mathematics for all learners.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support it in its goal to evaluate how effectively manaakitanga practices are engaging and enabling learners to achieve equitable and excellent outcomes in mathematics.

  • leaders who are actively building a learner-centred kaupapa centred on the wellbeing of all learners
  • school systems that align with the strengths and priorities of all learners and the community
  • a localised curriculum that is focused on the narratives of Moturoa, Ngāmotu (New Plymouth).

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • investigating the extent to which there is shared understanding of manaakitanga practices and the potential they have to positively impact on learning outcomes
  • build capacity in approaches to teaching mathematics
  • build a shared understanding of engagement in mathematics
  • develop a shared understanding of accelerated progress.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
