Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within 28 months of the Education Review Office and Havelock North High School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Havelock North High school is located in Havelock North and provides co-education for learners in Years 9 to 13. The school motto of ‘aim to excel, whāia te iti kahurangi’, underpins the school’s vision to give each student every opportunity to be the best they can be. A new Principal was appointed in Term 4 2022.

Havelock North High School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

  • maximise the opportunities for students to function as positive and responsible citizens
  • provide high quality learning experiences which contribute to the growth and continuous improvement of students
  • the school will be highly valued by the community and make connections with local, national and global communities
  • through involvement in the widest possible range of school activities, establish a culture of pride and an attitude amongst students where success is valued and celebrated.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Havelock North High School’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate the extent to which progress and achievement information is used in the junior school to support and promote equitable and excellent outcomes for all learners.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:

  • to ensure equitable and excellent outcomes for all learners in Years 9 and 10
  • to strengthen systems and processes to gather achievement information to track, monitor and report on progress and achievement in the junior school
  • to ensure achievement information is used effectively to inform teaching and learning strategies in Years 9 and 10
  • to further support access for all learners to broader curriculum and meaningful pathways for success.

The school expects to see:

  • robust systems and processes for tracking, monitoring and reporting on learner progress and achievement in the junior school
  • achievement data and assessment for learning used effectively across the junior school to promote and support improved equity and excellence in all learner outcomes
  • improved attendance, engagement and accelerated progress particularly for targeted students.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to evaluate the extent to which progress and achievement information is used in the junior school:

  • leadership’s commitment to improving and strengthening teaching capability and capacity through a professional learning community
  • well established systems in the senior school for monitoring, tracking and supporting student achievement at National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) levels
  • supportive, respectful relationships with a focus on strengthening student agency.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • ensuring systems and processes are in place to track, monitor and report on learner progress and achievement in the junior school to identify acceleration and supports for targeted students
  • defining the key progress indicators for learning across all curriculum areas in the junior school
  • continuing to build capacity and capability for teachers in effective use of data and assessment practices to inform teaching and learning
  • developing a shared understanding of responsive teaching practice at Havelock North High School that sets high expectations for teaching and learning across the school.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
