LatestTe Ara Huarau | School Profile Report
Background
This Profile Report was written within 12 months of the Education Review Office and Glen Oroua School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz
Context
Glen Oroua School is a full primary school located in rural Manawatū providing education for tamariki in Years 1 to 8. A new principal was appointed in January 2021. The school vision is for tamariki to develop as kaitiaki for their community - actively involved in their community, socially and environmentally - and with the skills and competencies to do so effectively.
Glen Oroua School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:
- to respond to the learners’ individual needs, ensuring equitable progress in their own learning journey
- for all learners to enjoy learning within contexts that value and reflect the school community and promote understanding of the significance of the local environment
- that students and staff have strategies to recognise and support their own and others' well-being.
You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Glen Oroua School’s website.
ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how well the school is designing a contextually relevant localised curriculum that ensures equitable and high-reaching outcomes for all learners.
The rationale for selecting this evaluation is to:
- ensure equitable and high reaching outcomes for Māori and all learners
- partner with whānau and community to design a responsive curriculum that sustains the identity, language and culture of Māori and all learners
- to uphold the intent and mana of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
The school expects to see:
- planned changes in its approaches to partnerships and curriculum where the cultures of all learners and that of mana whenua are embedded in their learning experiences
- equitable and high reaching outcomes for all learners.
Strengths
The school can draw from the following strengths to support the school in its goal to design a responsive curriculum that ensures equitable and high-reaching outcomes for all learners.
- students participate, learn and thrive in a caring, collaborative, inclusive learning environment
- leadership builds relational trust and effective collaboration across the school community
- parents, whānau and the community are welcomed and involved in school activities as respected and valued partners in learning.
Where to next?
Moving forward, the school will prioritise developing the localised curriculum through:
- deepening the school’s reciprocal relationship and engagement with mana whenua
- professional learning to strengthen school-wide knowledge and capability in te ao Māori and te reo Māori.
ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
