This course is designed to support your knowledge and understanding of digital tools for learning and life beyond school. 

You will learn to use tools to support literacy (including typing, speech options, creating presentations in Word and Google), learn to navigate social media and online spaces safely, and learn tips and strategies to manage your digital content.

Supporting learning and application of digital literacies.  

Students will learn essential skills for life (independent or supported living). Learning will be based around preparation for transition beyond school, and will include such skills as budgeting and shopping, filling in forms, creating a curriculum vitae, navigating maps, understanding transportation timetables, personal hygiene and self-care, and preparation of basic meals. 

All learning activities will be specific to the individual and centred around cultural practices. 

This course will offer opportunities to connect with community groups where available.

Functional numeracy and literacy are integral components of any individual's life skills. 

This course continues to develop functional literacy skills through numeracy (foundation) within a community of learning (group problem solving).

In this course you will explore movement to understand and create dance.  You will learn the fundamentals of dance - the elements of dance and choreographic devices, extend your personal movement skills and dance vocabulary and explore the vocabulary of others.  You will learn to participate and collaborate in groups to create sequences based on ideas from a variety of stimuli and increase your performance confidence. Even if you have never danced before, you can totally succeed in this course.

In Year 9 Social Sciences, students explore how societies function, how decisions are made, and how history shapes our modern world. 

Guided by Aotearoa New Zealand's refreshed curriculum (Te Mātaiaho), learning spans four core strands: History, Geography, Civics, and Economic Activity. 

This foundational course prepares students to be informed, active citizens of Aotearoa and the wider world, setting the stage for senior Social Sciences. 

Students explore the design and production of soft material products through practical, creative projects. 

They develop skills in pattern interpretation, measuring, cutting, sewing and textile construction while learning about fabrics, fibres, sustainability and the design process. Students apply creative thinking and problem-solving skills to design and make functional products, building confidence in using tools, equipment and safe workshop practices.

Students will learn essential skills for life (independent or supported living). Learning will be based around preparation for transition beyond school, and will include such skills as budgeting and shopping, filling in forms, creating a curriculum vitae, navigating maps, understanding transportation timetables, personal hygiene and self-care, and preparation of basic meals. 

All learning activities will be specific to the individual and centred around cultural practices. 

This course will offer opportunities to connect with community groups where available.

Functional numeracy and literacy are integral components of any individual's life skills.

This course is designed for new beginners as well as students continuing from Year 9. Everyone starts with the basics and builds confidence through practical, hands‑on digital projects. Students learn how simple programs, algorithms, and digital systems work, and how these ideas connect to real‑world technology.

Programming

Using interactive coding platforms, students design simple games and animations to understand core programming logic such as loops, variables, and conditions. They learn how to plan, test, and debug their code as it becomes more complex.

Physical Computing

Students bring code to life by programming BBC micro:bits and Maqueen robots. They learn how digital devices use inputs, outputs, and data to control movement, respond to sensors, and solve real‑world problems.

Computer Science

Throughout the course, students develop key computational thinking skills — decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithm design. They learn how data is represented and how algorithms guide digital systems.

Digital Media

This hands‑on introductory course empowers students to become creators of technology, not just consumers. Over 20 weeks, students build foundational skills in Digital Media in preparation for NCEA level 1.  

Web Development

Students learn how HTML and CSS work together to build structured, styled web pages. They design and develop their own web outcomes while applying layout principles, visual communication, and responsible sourcing of online content.

3D Design & Printing

Using Tinkercad, students create 3D models and learn how digital design becomes physical through 3D printing. They explore shape, scale, iteration, and how digital tools support real‑world problem‑solving.

Game Development

As you tackle more challenging shapes and designs, you'll continue to refine your drawing and presentation skills.

All year 9 science classes will be learning the same content in a single year-long course. 

This course is designed to support your knowledge and understanding of digital tools for learning and life beyond school. 

You will learn to use tools to support literacy (including typing, speech options, creating presentations in Word and Google), learn to navigate social media and online spaces safely, and learn tips and strategies to manage your digital content.

Supporting learning and application of digital literacies.  

This first semester course makes best use of our garden resources. Students will prepare and plant outdoor seedbeds with late summer/autumn crops. 

As they do this they will learn about the life processes of plants and how different management practices (such as fertiliser application, irrigation and weed control) affects the production of different crops & products. 

This second semester course teaches students the physical, chemical and biological properties of soils. 

Students will learn about how common farming techniques are used to modify soils to improve their properties in different situations. 

The practical component of the second semester course involves students sowing plants in containers to grow in pots as the weather warms up.

First, you will design an innovative shade structure for our school, blending both Māori and modern design influences while mastering sketching and CAD modeling. Then, you will step into the role of a product designer to create a sustainable water bottle or a unique perfume vessel. 

Through these projects, you'll sharpen your creative problem-solving and technical drawing skills, laying a strong foundation for future design studies in DVC.

Materials and Processing Technology or BCITO BCATS Level 1

BCATS Level 1 provides students with an introduction to trade pathways through practical, project-based learning. Updated under the new Waihanga Ara Rau / NZQA Skill Standards, this course transitions away from legacy unit standards to offer graded assessment (Achieved, Merit, and Excellence), rewarding precision, independence, and technical execution. Students gain foundational skills in workshop health and safety, trade measurements, material properties, tool operations, and basic joinery as they build practical timber projects.

Throughout this full-year course, you will explore how diverse cultural, ethical, and environmental values shape commerce both locally in the Wairarapa and nationally across Aotearoa’s evolving economy.

You will gain the essential knowledge, skills, and values needed to thrive in the economic world by analyzing how business decisions impact wellbeing, equity, and sustainability. The course examines how culture, outside events, and the sustainable use of scarce resources influence consumer behavior, organizational purpose, and stakeholder outcomes. 

You will also discover how whānau, communities, and businesses are financially interwoven, and how society prospers through guardianship, enterprise, innovation, and trade—empowering you to reflect on how commerce can serve as a force for positive change.

In this course you will learn about performing as an ensemble; entrances and exits, awareness of other dancers and performance protocols and prepare a group dance for performance. 

You will learn about using the elements of dance and choreographic devices and collaboration in a group to choreograph dance sequences and will produce a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate your understanding of choreographic processes. 

You will select and use choreographic devices, processes, and technologies to develop dance ideas and create sequences to complete a choreography portfolio as well as a portfolio of dance performances.

Students develop their ability to design, develop, and evaluate digital solutions through programming and digital technologies projects. 

They create computer programs using computational thinking and programming concepts, and develop digital outcomes using technologies such as HTML, CSS, and other digital tools to meet user needs. Students explore the principles of effective human-computer interfaces and apply planning for practice skills to manage projects, refine ideas, and evaluate outcomes. Through practical development, students strengthen their problem-solving, creativity, and understanding of how digital technologies can be used to address real-world challenges.

In this course you will learn about stars, the sun, our moon and Earth and how they interact to give us seasons, phases of the moon, tides and eclipses. 

You will learn about seasonal patterns in daylength and temperature in Aotearoa and compare these to other places in the Pacific and the rest of the world.  

The course also touches on light from an Earth and space science context.

In this course you will learn about interactions within the Earth’s own systems and how humans have altered these systems. Human alterations include (but are not limited to) deforestation, farming, introduced animal and plant pests. 

You will be investigating the different Earth “spheres” - geosphere / biosphere / hydrosphere. Specifically, how these spheres interact and how they have been affected by human activities.

This course will focus on performance techniques - the use of Voice, Body, Movement and Space on stage. 

We will look at a range of plays and playwrights, performing and reflecting on our performance. We will also be responding to the works of  others, including professional theatre works and works. 

This course focuses on scripted theatre from Aotearoa and the world, moving into use of creative processes and responding to live theatre. 

You will be working on three assessment standards in this course. They will involve the following disciplines: paint, photo, sculpt, design and print. There is one Internal and two Externals, which you will work on throughout the year.

Your work will be based on a theme for you to explore in any way that you wish.

You will be learning new processes and techniques to produce a series of trials, for which you will make notes, to show the processes you have used for the 1.3. This will go towards a one-off artwork such as a lightbox, a zine, a tunnel book or an installation for the 1.2. You will create a series of works relating to your theme that includes one or more disciplines, such as painting and printmaking, to display on a folio board for the 1.4.

This course helps students prepare for and safely enjoy the outdoors through a mix of planning, a local day trip, and an overnight experience. 

Along the way, they build personal awareness, resilience, and independence while developing teamwork and practical outdoor skills.

In this first semester science course students can set themselves up for a whole year of horticulture or a mixture of agricultural and horticultural learning. There will be theory and practical skills in the school horticulture plot. 

Students will grow and plant out seedlings in the new greenhouses at school. Students will keep track of their garden activities by keeping a handwritten or digital Record of Work. Students may also set up an extended AGHORT practical investigation that will run into semester 2. 

The course is a mixture of Unit Standards and Achievement Standards. 

This second semester science course focuses on how modifications of the physical environment for horticulture and agriculture affects the environment. These effects may impact on organisms and the quality of air, water, or soil. Due to the seasonal nature of growing plants, some students will also be finishing work started in semester one. Students new to the course may opt to do these as well.

If students would prefer to undertake Unit Standards there are shorter units on naming and identifying a range of plants by their features, and understanding the factors that affect plant growth. Students may also continue their extended practical investigation from semester one.

FULL YEAR COURSE

Then, you will move into the world of product design by creating a unique lighting solution. Throughout these assignments, you'll master freehand sketching,  and CAD software to bring your creative concepts to life.

This course forms the foundation for the Level 3 DVC course.

This comprehensive Level 2 Biology course merges the study of biological systems and genetic foundations. You will begin by investigating the inner workings of enzymes and their critical roles in life processes. Also, exploring the diverse fauna of New Zealand to understand complex ecological patterns is part of this course.

The journey continues as you compare life processes across various organisms and see how adaptations facilitate survival and reproduction. Furthermore, you will delve into the molecular world of DNA to understand how variation is created and why mutations are the ultimate source of genetic diversity.

This course is highly recommended for students intending to progress to Level 3 Biology.

Materials and Processing Technology or BCITO BCATS Level 2

BCATS Level 2 prepares secondary students for direct entry into trade apprenticeships, tertiary trade training, or employment across the construction and allied industries. Updated under the Waihanga Ara Rau / NZQA Skill Standards framework, this course transitions to graded assessments (Achieved, Merit, and Excellence), rewarding students for technical accuracy, safety consistency, flair, and independent workmanship. Students work on larger, multi-component construction or joinery projects, developing advanced competency with hand tools, portable power tools, and fixed workshop machinery.

If you enjoy thinking and working creatively using painting and drawing materials to show different techniques, this is the course for you. You will look at and interpret the work of traditional and contemporary New Zealand and International artists.  In this course, you will create a series of drawings and paintings relating to a theme of your choice within a given brief. There are three assessments 2.2, 2.3 and 2.4.

The 2.2 and 2.3 are Internals and the 2.4 is the External art board.

Ideally, you will be confident in drawing and painting, be self-disciplined and have an ability to problem solve.

If you like using cameras to be creative, then this is the course for you. 

You will learn how to take and then manipulate and edit photos once you have taken them, as well as learn how to use traditional darkroom processes. You will view and respond to traditional and contemporary analogue and digital photographs exhibited in galleries and other locations, and find out how and why they are made. 

There are three assessments for this course 2.2, 2.3 and 2.4.

Students will research, interpret, and create artworks, haka, waiata, mōteatea, and other performance pieces informed by tikanga, pūrākau, and kaupapa Māori. The course encourages  ākonga to  creatively respond through art and waiata.

BCATS Level 3 is the flagship senior secondary trade pathway designed for Year 13 students preparing for direct transition into apprenticeships, tertiary trade training, or employment across carpentry, joinery, and allied construction trades. Assessed through a blend of internal and external standards, this course empowers you to analyse how local developments and significant global forces intersect to form the world we live in today.

This course is a preparatory course for NCEA Level 3 Music assessment, which may include several internally assessed standards, and lays the foundation for the remainder of the standards which will be completed in semester 2. 

The nature of NCEA Achievement Standards in Music means that much of the assessment is portfolio based and will require a full year to complete. There are a wide range of Achievement Standards to select from at Level 3. Students can choose a “Music Making” pathway, including performance, composition and song writing, or a “Music Studies” pathway, which includes musical analysis, research and arrangement. Or an individualised programme can be tailored to suit. 

This course focuses on advanced risk management systems, guiding students to design and apply their own risk assessment forms through practical outdoor experiences. 

Students actively engage in whitewater kayaking, river crossing, ABL lead games and developing critical skills in hazard identification, safety planning, and decision-making. Through these challenging activities, students enhance their ability to manage risk effectively, work collaboratively, and demonstrate leadership in dynamic natural environments. 

Students will continue developing their previously learnt skills in rock climbing, including lead climbing and self-abseiling, while refining their technical and decision-making abilities in vertical environments. 

Students will participate in a multi-day expedition that includes tramping and a range of outdoor activities. This experience fosters independence, self-management, and leadership, while also deepening their understanding of risk management, environmental awareness, and teamwork in dynamic outdoor settings.

A definite advantage to have your own camera or a seriously good phone. We will have limited cameras available.

Explore the mechanical nature of our universe, including momentum of collisions, gravitation, rotational mechanics, and oscillating mechanics. 

Develop practical skills by looking at the relationship between dependent and independent variables through mathematical equations and graphs. Explore the in-depth understanding of atomic spectra lines, nuclear reactions, and the photoelectric effect. 

Learn about resistors, capacitors and inductors in DC circuits, as well as AC circuits. 

A good understanding of mathematics, including algebra and trigonometry, will enable you to be successful in this course.

This course is all about learning how to uncover the hidden stories behind data. Whether you are curious about predicting future trends, separating fact from opinion in the news, or understanding how probabilities shape everyday decisions, this course gives you practical tools for modern decision-making. 

You'll work directly with real-world datasets using modern statistical software, investigate cause-and-effect relationships by designing your own controlled experiments, and critically evaluate statistical reports to call out flawed data, bias, and misleading claims.

This course is intended for those who have successfully achieved NCEA Level 2 Te Reo Māori.

Develop your oral, written and listening ability by using whakataukī, kīanga, kiwaha and paki waitara. Broaden your language skills to communicate to NZ Curriculum Level 8. 

Students who undertake this course may also research Māori leaders, histories and acknowledge a range of dynamic contexts that have led to Te Ao Māori in this changing world. The focus this Semester is towards the written NCEA assessment.

This course is intended for those who have successfully achieved NCEA Level 2 Te Reo Māori or at the discretion of the kaiako. Continue to broaden your language comprehension skills to communicate to NZ Curriculum Level 8. Students who undertake this course will be researching Māori leaders, histories and acknowledging a range of dynamic contexts that have led to Te Ao Māori of today.

NOTE: This is a FULL year course, you must take this class semester one and semester two.

How do we take a good script and make it an awesome performance? 

A study of elements and conventions of theatre as a whole. Discovering and interpreting a script to realise an intention, working with Shakespearean texts and devices, and the skills involved in bringing them to life on the stage in a way that shows the meaning behind the author’s words. 

Taking the techniques learned in performance, moving on to writing one-act plays for the stage. 

Students will have opportunities to perform together from a script, as well as devising their own new works. We will look at different historical and social theatre styles. Students will get a chance to write their own plays, and potentially direct them for assessment. 

This course looks at training programmes, the principles that go into devising them, the methods you can use in training, the energy systems trained and how you put it all together to improve your fitness for a sport or event.  

Students will also look at evaluating different training programmes and seeing why they are or are not effective in improving performance. 

It is highly recommended that students seeking UE in PE (14 credits) take both Semester A and B to gain all the credits possible.

In this course, you’ll learn how to break a sport skill down into its key parts, figure out what makes it work using biomechanics, and give clear feedback (or feed-forward) to help someone improve their performance. 

You’ll also dive into a current sports event, trend, or issue, explore what’s really going on, and work out how it’s affecting – or could affect – New Zealand society.

Learning will be based around preparation for transition beyond school, and will include such skills as budgeting and shopping, filling in forms, creating a curriculum vitae, navigating maps, understanding transportation timetables, personal hygiene and self-care, and preparation of basic meals. 

All learning activities will be specific to the individual and centred around cultural practices. 

This course will offer opportunities to connect with community groups where available.

Functional numeracy and literacy are integral components of any individual's life skills. 

This course continues to develop functional literacy skills through numeracy (foundation) within a community of learning (group problem solving). 

Activities will be hands-on (where possible) and project-based on personal and cultural experiences.

In this course, you’ll dive into the world of Alchemy—making your own custom paints from scratch and seeing how they react with a variety of different things! 

Get hands-on with gelli prints, mixed media, inks, fluorescent pastels, and paint pens. You’ll even make your own  zig-zag books to fill with your paintings, doodles and mixed media masterpieces. 

From drawing anime characters to creating unique collage backgrounds, this is all about experimenting and finding your own artistic style!

This course will focus on workplace and life skills. Topics covered will include CV’s, pathway planning, interview skills and workplace rights and responsibilities. 

Students in this course are expected to engage in work experience or be attending a Trades Academy course. 

Level 1 students may be included if they are also engaged in a work experience placement. 

Please note, you can complete work experience without taking this course.

In this unit standard course, you will build your confidence to communicate in the workplace.
