LatestTe Ara Huarau | School Profile Report
Background
This Profile Report was written within 14 months of the Education Review Office and Elgin School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz
Context
Elgin School is a small primary school located in Gisborne and provides education for students in Years 1-6. Hauora for all is prioritised through the school’s overarching value of ‘Manaaki’. Te ao Māori perspective and te reo me onā tikanga are valued and promoted throughout the school community.
Elgin School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for tamariki are to:
-
ensure tamariki are self-confident and successful learners
-
continue growing whanaungatanga between home and school
-
ensure creativity is championed and celebrated through the Arts.
You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Elgin School’s website.
ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how well deliberate and responsive teaching and learning programmes embed Te Ao Māori to improve outcomes of equity and excellence for all tamariki.
The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:
-
to strengthen sense of belonging and cultural identity for all
-
the school has identified improving engagement, progress and achievement is a priority.
The school expects to see planned improvements in:
-
outcomes of equity and excellence, including attendance, for all tamariki
-
accelerated progress for those who are underachieving or at risk of underachieving
-
consistent teaching and learning practices, and use of assessment to effectively respond to tamariki needs and outcomes
-
tamariki demonstrating a strong sense of whakapapa and belonging.
Strengths
The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goals:
-
collaborative staff who are committed to improving outcomes for all tamariki
-
school values of manaaki that are prioritised and promoted throughout the school to support hauora and learning for all.
Where to next?
Moving forward, the school will prioritise achieving outcomes of equity and excellence for all tamariki through:
-
staff professional learning to strengthen schoolwide consistency of effective pedagogy and practice, and use of assessment information to respond to learner needs
-
strengthening relationships with whānau and community to support positive outcomes for tamariki
-
continuing to prioritise te reo and tikanga Māori within the school culture, curriculum and practices.
ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all tamariki. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
