By placing learning in real-world contexts, ākonga will engage more meaningfully in learning that holds validity for the outcome they are creating. While considering cultural values, of their own and of the end user, ākonga will learn to measure the outcome for its fitness for purpose against the brief with specifications.

In Materials and Processing Technology, the waka represents the development of the technological outcome. It is made by people, for people. Ākonga and kaiako work together to guide the waka to new destinations. Everyone in the waka has a role to play. We all come from different places, bringing diverse perspectives and unique skillsets to complete the team.

The waka is led by innovation. Sometimes we may set out on our journey with blue skies and calm seas, but skies can be deceiving, and tides can turn. Paddling in harmony, ākonga will use their skills to be innovative and adapt to new conditions while working towards their shared outcome. Together, ākonga will learn to use their knowledge and judgement to decide which is the best route to take and, with practice, they will become more independent and confident to chart their own routes.

Geography explores the land and the relationship that people have with it. To quote Gritzner, Geography asks “What Is Where, Why There, and Why Care?” 

The subject focuses on Aotearoa New Zealand and the wider Pacific region, so that ākonga can grow their relationship with their communities and environments, and explore knowledge systems and decision-making that matter to them. Ākonga will learn about how Te Tiriti o Waitangi is important in geography. This includes its values, and relevance in Aotearoa New Zealand.

This will lead to Level 2 Samoan and offer three internal and two external assessments, which are all endorsement papers.  This emphasis is on producing a speech, interaction, and writing.  Students will need to build their critical thinking and protocols about Samoan Language and culture through daily life. Students will be sharing and justifying information and ideas that are important.

This course is an introductory program for those with existing strengths in Gagana Samoa. This course will further skills and understanding through language components, and develop students' awareness of belongings, their life, and culture, through language and cultural knowledge.
