Context 

Havelock North Primary School caters for learners in years 1 to 6 and is located in the heart of Havelock North in Hawke’s Bay.

Havelock North Primary School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

  • to grow student achievement by providing quality teaching where all learners are engaged, inspired and achieving to their potential
  • to develop a fully inclusive school culture where whānau and community partnerships are nurtured and strengthened.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how effectively literacy practices promote improved outcomes for learners in new entrants to Year 3.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:

  • to promote equitable outcomes for all learners
  • the school has identified that strong literacy foundations in the junior school will empower learners as they transition through their schooling
  • to ensure that professional learning in literacy is translated into tangible and actionable steps that leads to improved outcomes for learners.

The school expects to see enhanced academic progress and achievement ensuring equitable literacy outcomes for all.

The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to enhance literacy outcomes:

  • trustees and leadership work collaboratively to realise the school’s strategic goals through the targeted support of internal and external expertise and resources
  • a positive and inclusive school culture that builds and sustains relational trust, collective efficacy and teacher agency
  • leadership enables purposeful internal evaluation that builds collective capacity and contributes to sustained improvement.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • a continued focus on equity for all learners in literacy, particularly Māori boys
  • ensuring that assessment activities are fit for purpose and support targeted instruction
  • strengthening reciprocal and learning centred relationships with community, families and whānau to support improved achievement in literacy.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community.
